And it came to pass after these things that Naas the king of the sons of Ammon died, and Hanan his son reigned in his place.

And David said, I will show mercy with Hanun son of Nahash, as his father showed mercy with me; and David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father; and David’s servants came into the land of the sons of Ammon to comfort him

And the princes of Ammon said to Hanun, Has David, honoring your father, not sent comforters to you so that they might search out the city? His servants have come to you to spy out the land.

And Hanun took David’s servants and shaved them, and removed half of their garments as far as the buttocks, and sent them away.

And they came to report to David concerning the men, and he sent to meet them, because they were greatly dishonored, and the king said, Sit in Jericho until your beards grow, and then return.

And the sons of Ammon saw that the people of David had become disgraced, and Hanun sent, and the sons of Ammon sent one thousand talents of silver to hire for themselves from Syria of Mesopotamia and from Syria of Maacah and from Zobah chariots and horsemen.

And they hired for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots and the king of Maacha and his people, and they came and camped opposite Medaba, and the sons of Ammon were gathered from their cities and came to wage war

And David heard, and he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men

And the sons of Ammon went out and drew up for battle by the gate of the city, and the kings who had come encamped by themselves in the plain

And Joab saw that they had become drawn up for battle against him face to face and from behind, and he chose from all the young men of Israel, and they took their battle line against the Syrians

And the rest of the people he gave into the hand of Abishai his brother, and they drew up in battle array opposite the sons of Ammon.

And he said, If the Syrians are stronger than me, then you shall be for me for salvation; and if the sons of Ammon are stronger than you, then I will save you.

Be strong, and let us strengthen ourselves for our people and for the cities of our God; and the Lord will do what is good in his eyes.

And Joab drew up in battle array, and the people with him, opposite the Syrians for war, and they fled from before him.

And the sons of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, and they also fled from before Joab and from before Abishai his brother, and they came into the city, and Joab came to Jerusalem.

And Aram saw that Israel had routed him, and he sent messengers, and they brought out the Aramean from beyond the river, and Shophach, the commander-in-chief of the force of Hadarezer, before them

And it was reported to David, and he gathered all Israel, and crossed the Jordan, and came upon them, and drew up in battle array against them. And the Syrians drew up in battle array before David, and they fought against him.

And Syria fled from before David, and David killed of the Syrians seven thousand chariots and forty thousand foot soldiers, and Shophach, the commander of the army, he killed.

And the servants of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated before Israel, and they made peace with David and served him, and the Syrians were no longer willing to help the sons of Ammon.
