And the anger of the Lord continued to burn against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, Go, number Israel and Judah.

And the king said to Joab, the commander of the force with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel from Dan even to Beersheba, and inspect the people, and I will know the number of the people.

And Joab said to the king, May the Lord your God add to the people as many as they, and as they a hundredfold, and may the eyes of my lord the king be seeing; and my lord the king, why does he desire in this matter?

And the word of the king prevailed against Joab and against the commanders of the force, and Joab and the commanders of the strength went out from before the king to number the people of Israel.

And they crossed the Jordan and encamped at Aroer, on the right of the city that is in the midst of the valley of Gad, and Eliezer.

And they came into Gilead and into the land of Thabasōn, which is Adasai, and they came to Danidan and Oudan and went around to Sidon

And they came to Maphsar of Tyre and to all the cities of the Hivite and of the Canaanite, and they came toward the south of Judah to Beersheba.

And they went through all the land and came from the end of nine months and twenty days to Jerusalem

And Joab gave the number of the census of the people to the king, and Israel became eight hundred thousand men of strength, drawing sword, and a man of Judah five hundred thousand fighting men.

And David’s heart struck him after numbering the people, and David said to the Lord, I have sinned greatly in what I have done now; O Lord, pass over, I pray, the lawlessness of your servant, because I have been made very foolish.

And David rose up in the morning, and a word of the Lord came to Gad the prophet, the seer of David, saying

Go and speak to David, saying, Thus says the Lord: Three things I am lifting up against you, and choose for yourself one of them, and I will do it to you.

And Gad went in to David and reported to him and said to him, Choose for yourself what shall happen: whether three years of famine shall come upon your land, or three months of your fleeing before your enemies, and they will be pursuing you, or three days of death in your land. Now therefore know and see what I shall answer to the one who sent me a word.

And David said to Gad, I am very distressed on every side; let me fall indeed into the hand of the Lord, for very many are his compassions; but into the hands of man I will by no means fall. And David chose for himself death.

And the days of the wheat harvest, and the Lord gave in Israel a death from morning until the hour of breakfast, and the breaking began among the people, and there died from the people from Dan and as far as Beer-sheba seventy thousand men

And the angel of God stretched out his hand against Jerusalem to destroy it, and the Lord was appeased concerning the evil, and he said to the angel who was destroying among the people, Much now, let down your hand. And the angel of the Lord was beside the threshing floor of Orna the Jebusite.

And David said to the Lord, in his seeing the angel striking among the people, and he said, Behold, I am it is I who have done wrong, and it is I who am the shepherd; I have done evil, and these, the sheep, what have they done? Let your hand, now, be against me and against the house of my father.

And Gad came to David on that day and said to him, Go up and set up an altar to the Lord in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

And David went up according to the word of Gad, according to the manner in which the Lord had commanded him.

And Orna looked down and saw the king and his servants passing by above him, and Orna went out and bowed to the king, with his face to the ground on the earth.

And Orna said, Why is it that my lord the king has come to his servant? And David said, To buy from you the threshing floor, to build an altar to the Lord, and the plague may be restrained from upon the people.

And Orna said to David, let my lord the king take and offer up to the Lord what is good in his eyes; behold, the oxen for a whole burnt offering, and the wheels, and the implements of the oxen for wood.

Ornan gave everything to the king, and Ornan said to the king, May the Lord your God bless you.

And the king said to Orna, No, but buying I will buy it from you for an exchange, and I will not offer up to the Lord my God burnt offering for nothing; and David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

And David built there an altar to the Lord, and he offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and Solomon added to the altar at the end, because it was small at the first, and the Lord heard for the land, and the breaking was restrained from upon Israel
