κατοικτίρας ὁ τύραννος καίπερ δεινῶς ὑπὸ τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτοῦ κακισθείς ὁρῶν ἤδη τὰ δεσμὰ περικείμενα πλησιέστερον αὐτὸν μετεπέμψατο καὶ παρηγορεῖν ἐπειρᾶτο λέγων
Whom the tyrant, having taken pity, although he had been terribly reviled by his brothers, seeing the bonds already lying around him, summoned him nearer and tried to comfort him, saying
You see the end of your brothers’ madness, for through disobedience they have died, having been tortured to death
But if you should not be persuaded, wretch, being tortured, you yourself also will die before your time.
And having been persuaded, you will be a friend, and you will command the affairs of the kingdom.
ταῦτα παρακαλῶν τὴν μητέρα τοῦ παιδὸς μετεπέμψατο ὅπως αὐτὴν ἐλεήσας τοσούτων υἱῶν στερηθεῖσαν παρορμήσειεν ἐπὶ τὴν σωτήριον εὐπείθειαν τὸν περιλειπόμενον
And while urging these things, he summoned the mother of the child, so that, having pitied her as deprived of so many sons, he might urge the one remaining to the saving obedience to be persuaded by her.
And the mother, encouraging him in the Hebrew language, as we shall say a little later, did so
Release me, he says, that I may speak to the king and to all the friends with him.
And rejoicing especially at the boy’s promise, they quickly released him.
and having run up to near the frying pans
φησιν καὶ πάντων πονηρῶν ἀσεβέστατε τύραννε οὐκ ᾐδέσθης παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ λαβὼν τὰ ἀγαθὰ καὶ τὴν βασιλείαν τοὺς θεράποντας αὐτοῦ κατακτεῖναι καὶ τοὺς τῆς εὐσεβείας ἀσκητὰς στρεβλῶσαι
You impious man, says he, and most ungodly of all wicked men, tyrant, you were not ashamed, having received from God the good things and the kingdom, to kill his servants and to torture the athletes of piety.
ὧν ταμιεύσεταί σε ἡ δίκη πυκνοτέρῳ καὶ αἰωνίῳ πυρὶ καὶ βασάνοις αἳ εἰς ὅλον τὸν αἰῶνα οὐκ ἀνήσουσίν σε
for which justice will store you up for denser and eternal fire and torments, which will not let you off for all eternity
ᾐδέσθης ἄνθρωπος ὤν θηριωδέστατε τοὺς ὁμοιοπαθεῖς καὶ ἐκ τῶν αὐτῶν γεγονότας στοιχείων γλωττοτομῆσαι καὶ τοῦτον καταικίσας τὸν τρόπον βασανίσαι
You were not ashamed, being a man, most beastlike, to cut out the tongues of those of like feeling and made from the same elements, and having insulted this one in this way to torture him
οἱ μὲν εὐγενῶς ἀποθανόντες ἐπλήρωσαν τὴν εἰς τὸν θεὸν εὐσέβειαν σὺ δὲ κακῶς οἰμώξεις τοὺς τῆς ἀρετῆς ἀγωνιστὰς ἀναιτίως ἀποκτεῖνας
But those who died nobly fulfilled their piety toward God, but you will mourn badly, having killed the champions of virtue without cause
Therefore he himself, being about to die, said
I will not desert the noble contest of my brothers.
But I call upon the ancestral God, that he may become gracious to our nation.
but both in the present life and when you have died he will punish you
And having prayed these things, he threw himself onto the pans, and thus he gave up his life
