In the third year of King Joakim of Judea, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.

παρέδωκεν αὐτὴν κύριος εἰς χεῖρας αὐτοῦ καὶ Ιωακιμ τὸν βασιλέα τῆς Ιουδαίας καὶ μέρος τι τῶν ἱερῶν σκευῶν τοῦ κυρίου καὶ ἀπήνεγκεν αὐτὰ εἰς Βαβυλῶνα καὶ ἀπηρείσατο αὐτὰ ἐν τῷ εἰδωλίῳ αὐτοῦ
The Lord delivered it into his hands, and Joakim the king of Judea, and part of the sacred vessels of the Lord; and he carried them to Babylon and set them in his idol shrine.
εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Αβιεσδρι τῷ ἑαυτοῦ ἀρχιευνούχῳ ἀγαγεῖν αὐτῷ ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν τῶν μεγιστάνων τοῦ Ισραηλ καὶ ἐκ τοῦ βασιλικοῦ γένους καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἐπιλέκτων
The king said to Abiesdri, his chief eunuch, to bring to him from the sons of the nobles of Israel, and from the royal lineage, and from the chosen ones.
ἀμώμους καὶ εὐειδεῖς καὶ ἐπιστήμονας ἐν πάσῃ σοφίᾳ καὶ γραμματικοὺς καὶ συνετοὺς καὶ σοφοὺς καὶ ἰσχύοντας ὥστε εἶναι ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ διδάξαι αὐτοὺς γράμματα καὶ διάλεκτον Χαλδαϊκὴν
Blameless, handsome in appearance, knowledgeable in every wisdom, versed in writing, understanding, wise, and strong, so as to be in the king’s palace and to teach them letters and the Chaldean language.
δίδοσθαι αὐτοῖς ἔκθεσιν ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ βασιλέως καθ᾿ ἑκάστην ἡμέραν καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς βασιλικῆς τραπέζης καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ οἴνου οὗ πίνει ὁ βασιλεύς καὶ ἐκπαιδεῦσαι αὐτοὺς ἔτη τρία καὶ ἐκ τούτων στῆσαι ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ βασιλέως
to give them a daily provision from the king’s household, both from the royal table and from the wine that the king drinks, and to educate them for three years and from among these to set them before the king
They were from the lineage of the sons of Israel, those from Judea: Daniel, Ananias, Mishael, Azarias.
ἐπέθηκεν αὐτοῖς ὁ ἀρχιευνοῦχος ὀνόματα τῷ μὲν Δανιηλ Βαλτασαρ τῷ δὲ Ανανια Σεδραχ καὶ τῷ Μισαηλ Μισαχ καὶ τῷ Αζαρια Αβδεναγω
The chief eunuch gave them names: to Daniel, Baltasar; to Hananiah, Sedrach; to Mishael, Misach; and to Azariah, Abdenago.
ἐνεθυμήθη Δανιηλ ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ ὅπως μὴ ἀλισγηθῇ ἐν τῷ δείπνῳ τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ ἐν ᾧ πίνει οἴνῳ καὶ ἠξίωσε τὸν ἀρχιευνοῦχον ἵνα μὴ συμμολυνθῇ
Daniel resolved in his heart that he would not be defiled by the king’s banquet and by the wine which he drank, and he asked the chief eunuch that he might not be defiled.
The Lord gave Daniel honor and favor before the chief eunuch.
εἶπεν ὁ ἀρχιευνοῦχος τῷ Δανιηλ ἀγωνιῶ τὸν κύριόν μου τὸν βασιλέα τὸν ἐκτάξαντα τὴν βρῶσιν ὑμῶν καὶ τὴν πόσιν ὑμῶν ἵνα μὴ ἴδῃ τὰ πρόσωπα ὑμῶν διατετραμμένα καὶ ἀσθενῆ παρὰ τοὺς συντρεφομένους ὑμῖν νεανίας τῶν ἀλλογενῶν καὶ κινδυνεύσω τῷ ἰδίῳ τραχήλῳ
The chief eunuch said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink, lest he see your faces looking altered and weak compared with the young men of foreign descent who are being nourished with you, and I become liable with my own neck.”
Daniel said to Abiesdri, who had been appointed chief eunuch over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, Azariah:
δὴ τοὺς παῖδάς σου ἐφ᾿ ἡμέρας δέκα καὶ δοθήτω ἡμῖν ἀπὸ τῶν ὀσπρίων τῆς γῆς ὥστε κάπτειν καὶ ὑδροποτεῖν
Now, your servants, for ten days, and let there be given to us from the vegetables of the land, so that we may eat and drink water.
ἐὰν φανῇ ἡ ὄψις ἡμῶν διατετραμμένη παρὰ τοὺς ἄλλους νεανίσκους τοὺς ἐσθίοντας ἀπὸ τοῦ βασιλικοῦ δείπνου καθὼς ἐὰν θέλῃς οὕτω χρῆσαι τοῖς παισί σου
If our appearance appears more wasted than that of the other young men eating from the king’s banquet, then deal with your servants as you wish.
He dealt with them in this manner and tested them for ten days.
δὲ τὰς δέκα ἡμέρας ἐφάνη ἡ ὄψις αὐτῶν καλὴ καὶ ἡ ἕξις τοῦ σώματος κρείσσων τῶν ἄλλων νεανίσκων τῶν ἐσθιόντων τὸ βασιλικὸν δεῖπνον
And after the ten days, their appearance was seen to be good and the condition of their bodies better than that of the other youths who ate the king’s dinner.
And Abiesdri was taking away their dinner and their wine and giving them legumes instead.
τοῖς νεανίσκοις ἔδωκεν ὁ κύριος ἐπιστήμην καὶ σύνεσιν καὶ φρόνησιν ἐν πάσῃ γραμματικῇ τέχνῃ καὶ τῷ Δανιηλ ἔδωκε σύνεσιν ἐν παντὶ ῥήματι καὶ ὁράματι καὶ ἐνυπνίοις καὶ ἐν πάσῃ σοφίᾳ
The Lord gave the young men knowledge and understanding and wisdom in every literary art, and to Daniel he gave understanding in every word and vision and dreams and in all wisdom.
δὲ τὰς ἡμέρας ταύτας ἐπέταξεν ὁ βασιλεὺς εἰσαγαγεῖν αὐτούς καὶ εἰσήχθησαν ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀρχιευνούχου πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Ναβουχοδονοσορ
And after these days the king ordered them to be brought in, and they were brought from the chief eunuch to King Nebuchadnezzar.
ὡμίλησεν αὐτοῖς ὁ βασιλεύς καὶ οὐχ εὑρέθη ἐν τοῖς σοφοῖς ὅμοιος τῷ Δανιηλ καὶ Ανανια καὶ Μισαηλ καὶ Αζαρια καὶ ἦσαν παρὰ τῷ βασιλεῖ
The king spoke with them, and among all the wise men none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; and they were in the presence of the king.
ἐν παντὶ λόγῳ καὶ συνέσει καὶ παιδείᾳ ὅσα ἐζήτησε παρ᾿ αὐτῶν ὁ βασιλεύς κατέλαβεν αὐτοὺς σοφωτέρους δεκαπλασίως ὑπὲρ τοὺς σοφιστὰς καὶ τοὺς φιλοσόφους τοὺς ἐν πάσῃ τῇ βασιλείᾳ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐδόξασεν αὐτοὺς ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ κατέστησεν αὐτοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ ἀνέδειξεν αὐτοὺς σοφοὺς παρὰ πάντας τοὺς αὐτοῦ ἐν πράγμασιν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ αὐτοῦ
In every word and understanding and education, whatever the king sought from them, he found them ten times wiser than the sophists and the philosophers who were in his whole kingdom; and the king honored them, appointed them rulers, and declared them wise above all his men in affairs throughout all his land and in his kingdom.
And Daniel was until the first year of the reign of Cyrus, king of the Persians.
