And Jerobaal, he is Gideon, and all the people with him rose early and encamped on the land of Aroed; and the camp of Midian and Amalek was for him from the north, from the mountain of Abar in the valley.
And the Lord said to Gideon, The people with you are many, so as not to give Midian into their hand, lest Israel boast against me, saying, My hand saved me.
And the Lord said to him, Speak now in the ears of the people, saying, Whoever is cowardly and fearful, let him turn back. And they rushed from Mount Gilead, and twenty-two thousand returned from the people, and ten thousand were left.
And the Lord said to Gideon, Yet the people are many; bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there; and it will be that whomever I say to you, This one shall go with you, he shall go with you, and whomever I say to you, He shall not go with you, he shall not go with you.
And he brought the people down to the water, and the Lord said to Gideon, Everyone who shall lap with his tongue from the water as a dog laps, you shall set him apart by himself; and everyone who shall bend down on his knees to drink, you shall remove him by himself.
And the whole number of those who lapped with their tongue was three hundred men, and all the rest of the people bent down on their knees to drink water
And the Lord said to Gideon, With the three hundred men who lapped I will save you, and I will give Midian into your hand; and let all the people go back, each man to his place.
And they took the provision of the people in their hand and their horns, and every man of Israel he sent away, each man to his tent; but he kept the three hundred men, and the camp of Midian was below him in the valley.
And it came to pass in that night that the Lord said to him, Rise, go down quickly from here into the camp, because I have delivered it into your hand.
and you will hear what they are speaking, and afterward your hands will be strengthened, and you will go down into the camp. And he went down, he and Phara his servant, to the part of the fifty men who were in the camp
And Midian and Amalek and all the sons of the east had encamped in the valley, like a locust for multitude, and to their camels there was no number, but they were like the sand that is on the seashore for multitude
And Gideon entered, and behold, a man was relating the dream to his neighbor, and he said, Behold, the dream which I dreamed: and behold, a cake of barley bread rolling in the camp of Midian, and it came as far as the tent of Midian and struck it and overturned it, and the tent fell.
And his neighbor answered and said, This is nothing other than the sword of Gideon son of Joash, a man of Israel; the Lord has given Midian and all the camp into his hand.
And it came to pass, as Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, that he worshiped the Lord and returned to the camp of Israel and said, Rise up, for the Lord has given the camp of Midian into your hands.
And he said to them, From me you shall see, and thus you shall do; and behold, I am going into the middle of the camp, and it shall be as if I do, thus you shall do
And Gideon and the hundred men with him entered at the beginning of the middle watch, though they had just roused the watchers, and they blew with the horns and shattered the jars that were in their hands.
And the three companies blew the trumpets in the horns and smashed the jars, and they took in their left hand the torches and in their right hand the horns for blowing, and they cried out, A sword for the Lord and for Gideon.
And the three hundred ram’s-horn trumpets sounded, and the Lord set a man’s sword against his neighbor and against all the camp, and the camp fled as far as Beth-sittah and the assembled ones as far as the edge of Abel-meholah and upon Tabbath
And Gideon sent messengers throughout all the border of Ephraim, saying, Go down to meet Midian, and seize for yourselves the water as far as Bethbara and the Jordan. And every man of Ephraim cried out, and they took the water before them as far as Bethbara and the Jordan.
And they seized the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb, and they killed Oreb at Surin and they killed Zeeb at Iakephzeeb, and they pursued Midian, and they brought the head of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon from beyond the Jordan.
