1
And Judith fell upon her face and put ashes upon her head and stripped off the sackcloth with which she had clothed herself, and it was just being offered in Jerusalem in the house of God, the incense of that evening, and Judith cried out with a loud voice to the Lord and said:
2
Lord, the God of my father Simeon, to whom you gave a sword in hand for vengeance upon foreigners, who loosed a virgin’s womb for defilement and stripped her thigh for shame and profaned her womb for reproach; for you said, It shall not be so, and they did so.
3
because you gave their rulers over for slaughter, and their bed, which had been ashamed of their deceit, having been deceived, into blood, and you struck slaves against masters, and masters on their thrones
4
and you gave their women as plunder and their daughters into captivity and all their spoils for division to sons loved by you, who also were jealous with your jealousy and abhorred the defilement of their blood and called upon you for help, O God, my God, and hear me, the widow
7
For behold, the Assyrians were multiplied in their power; they were exalted in horse and rider; they boasted in the arm of foot soldiers; they hoped in shield and spear and bow and sling, and they did not know that you are Lord, breaking wars
8
Lord is your name; you, shatter their strength in your power, and break down their dominion in your wrath, for they have planned to profane your holy things, to defile the tent of the resting-place of your glorious name, to throw down with iron the horn of your altar.
11
For your power is not in multitude, nor your dominion among the mighty, but you are God of the lowly, helper of the lesser, support of the weak, protector of the despairing, savior of the hopeless.
13
And give my word and deception into the wound and bruise of those who have plotted hard against your covenant and your consecrated house and the summit of Zion and the house of the inheritance of your sons.
14
and make upon every nation of yours and every tribe the knowledge of knowing that you are the God, God of all power and might, and there is no other one defending the race of Israel except you
