Therefore through like things they were punished worthily, and through a multitude of beasts they were tormented.

In place of that punishment, you did good to your people; for desire of appetite, you prepared strange-tasting food, quail.

so that those men, longing for food because of the detestable appearance of the creatures sent upon them and the necessary appetite, might turn away, but they, becoming in need for a little while, might partake of a strange taste

For it was necessary that there should come upon those an unavoidable lack, while to these only it should be shown how their enemies were being tormented.

For when the wrath of wild beasts came upon them and they were destroyed by the bites of crooked serpents, your anger did not remain to the end

But for a little while they were troubled for admonition, having a symbol of salvation for remembrance of your law’s commandment

For the one who turned was not being saved because of what was being seen, but because of you, the savior of all.

And in this also you persuaded our enemies that you are the one who delivers from every evil

For the bites of locusts and flies killed them, and no healing was found for their soul, because they were worthy to be punished by such things.

But even the teeth of venomous dragons did not overcome your sons; for your mercy passed over them and healed them.

For as a reminder of your sayings they were being pricked, and quickly they were being saved, so that, having not fallen into deep forgetfulness, they might become untroubled by your beneficence.

For neither herb nor poultice healed them, but your word, O Lord, the one healing all things.

For you have authority over life and death, and you bring down to the gates of Hades and bring up again

But a man kills by his evil; but the spirit that has gone out he does not turn back, nor does he release a soul that has been taken away.

But it is impossible to flee your hand.

For those impiously denying to know you were flogged by foreign rains and hailstones and showers, pursued by irresistible storms and consumed by fire.

For the most astonishing thing, in the all-quenching water, the fire worked more strongly; for the world is a champion of the righteous

For at one time the flame was being tamed, so that it might not burn up the animals sent against the ungodly, but that they themselves, seeing it, might know that they were being driven by God’s judgment

and at one time also in the midst of water it burns beyond the power of fire, in order that it may destroy the produce of an unrighteous land

In return for which you gave your people the food of angels and from heaven provided them with ready bread without toil, having all delight and suited to every harmonious taste

For your substance was making known your own sweetness toward children, while serving the desire of the one being brought, it was changed into whatever one wished.

But snow and crystal endured fire and were not melted, so that they might know that fire burning in the hail and flashing in the rains destroyed the fruits of the enemies.

for this again, in order that the righteous might be nourished, and it has forgotten its own power

For creation, serving you the one who made it, is stretched out for punishment against the unjust and is relaxed for beneficence on behalf of those who have trusted in you.

Because of this also then, changing into all things, it served by your all-nourishing gift for the will of those in need

so that your sons, whom you loved, Lord, may learn that it is not the births of fruits that nourish a man, but your word preserves those who trust in you

For the thing not being destroyed by fire was simply melted when heated by a brief ray of the sun.

so that it may be known that the sun must hasten toward your thanksgiving and to meet you at the rising of light

For the hope of the ungrateful will melt away like winter frost and will flow away like useless water
