1 Timothy 1 — SBL Greek New Testament

Παῦλος ἀπόστολος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ κατ' ἐπιταγὴν θεοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν καὶ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ τῆς ἐλπίδος ἡμῶν

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope

Τιμοθέῳ γνησίῳ τέκνῳ ἐν πίστει· χάρις, ἔλεος, εἰρήνη ἀπὸ θεοῦ πατρὸς καὶ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν.

To Timothy, a genuine child in faith: grace, mercy, peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Καθὼς παρεκάλεσά σε προσμεῖναι ἐν Ἐφέσῳ, πορευόμενος εἰς Μακεδονίαν, ἵνα παραγγείλῃς τισὶν μὴ ἑτεροδιδασκαλεῖν

As I urged you to remain in Ephesus when going to Macedonia, so that you might command certain people not to teach different doctrines.

μηδὲ προσέχειν μύθοις καὶ γενεαλογίαις ἀπεράντοις, αἵτινες ἐκζητήσεις παρέχουσι μᾶλλον ἢ οἰκονομίαν θεοῦ τὴν ἐν πίστει--

Do not pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which promote controversies rather than God’s administration that is in faith.

τὸ δὲ τέλος τῆς παραγγελίας ἐστὶν ἀγάπη ἐκ καθαρᾶς καρδίας καὶ συνειδήσεως ἀγαθῆς καὶ πίστεως ἀνυποκρίτου,

The goal of the command is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith,

ὧν τινες ἀστοχήσαντες ἐξετράπησαν εἰς ματαιολογίαν,

Some having missed the mark have turned aside to empty talk,

θέλοντες εἶναι νομοδιδάσκαλοι, μὴ νοοῦντες μήτε ἃ λέγουσιν μήτε περὶ τίνων διαβεβαιοῦνται.

Wanting to be teachers of the law, not understanding either what they say or the matters about which they make confident assertions.

Οἴδαμεν δὲ ὅτι καλὸς ὁ νόμος ἐάν τις αὐτῷ νομίμως χρῆται,

We know that the law is good if anyone uses it lawfully,

Knowing this, that the law is not laid down for the righteous, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their father or mother, for murderers,

πόρνοις, ἀρσενοκοίταις, ἀνδραποδισταῖς, ψεύσταις, ἐπιόρκοις, καὶ εἴ τι ἕτερον τῇ ὑγιαινούσῃ διδασκαλίᾳ ἀντίκειται,

for sexually immoral persons, for men who practice homosexuality, for enslavers, for liars, for perjurers, and for whatever else is contrary to sound teaching,

κατὰ τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τῆς δόξης τοῦ μακαρίου θεοῦ, ὃ ἐπιστεύθην ἐγώ.

according to the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, which was entrusted to me.

Χάριν ἔχω τῷ ἐνδυναμώσαντί με Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ τῷ κυρίῳ ἡμῶν, ὅτι πιστόν με ἡγήσατο θέμενος εἰς διακονίαν,

I give thanks to the Christ Jesus our Lord who strengthened me, because he considered me faithful, appointing me to service,

τὸ πρότερον ὄντα βλάσφημον καὶ διώκτην καὶ ὑβριστήν· ἀλλὰ ἠλεήθην, ὅτι ἀγνοῶν ἐποίησα ἐν ἀπιστίᾳ,

formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and an insolent man, but I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief,

ὑπερεπλεόνασεν δὲ ἡ χάρις τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν μετὰ πίστεως καὶ ἀγάπης τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ.

But the grace of our Lord overflowed exceedingly with faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

The trustworthy saying and worthy of full acceptance is that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.

16

But for this reason I was shown mercy, so that in me, the first, Christ Jesus might demonstrate all patience, as an example to those who are about to believe in him for eternal life.

17

τῷ δὲ βασιλεῖ τῶν αἰώνων, ἀφθάρτῳ, ἀοράτῳ, μόνῳ θεῷ, τιμὴ καὶ δόξα εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων· ἀμήν.

Now to the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

I entrust this command to you, child Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made about you, so that you may fight the good fight in them,

19

ἔχων πίστιν καὶ ἀγαθὴν συνείδησιν, ἥν τινες ἀπωσάμενοι περὶ τὴν πίστιν ἐναυάγησαν·

Holding faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected concerning the faith have shipwrecked.

20

ὧν ἐστιν Ὑμέναιος καὶ Ἀλέξανδρος, οὓς παρέδωκα τῷ Σατανᾷ ἵνα παιδευθῶσι μὴ βλασφημεῖν.

Among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan so that they may be disciplined not to blaspheme.
