But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a piece of property.

And he kept back part of the price, with the knowledge of his wife, and having brought a certain part, he laid it at the feet of the apostles.

But Peter said, Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to withhold part of the price of the land?

Did it not remain yours to keep, and after it was sold, was it not under your own authority? Why have you agreed to do this in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.

But Ananias, having heard these words, fell down and died; and great fear came upon all who heard.

But when the younger men rose up, they wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him.

And it happened about three hours later that his wife, not knowing what had happened, came in.

But Peter answered her, Tell me, did you give this much for the land? She said, Yes, this much.

But Peter said to her, Why have you agreed to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who buried your husband are at the door and will carry you out.

And he fell down immediately at his feet and breathed his last; and when the young men entered, they found her dead, and carrying her out, they buried her beside her husband.

And a great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard these things.

And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were happening among the people; and all were together united in Solomon’s Colonnade.

But none of the rest dared to join them, yet the people highly honored them.

But more were added believing in the Lord, crowds of both men and women.

So that even into the public squares they would carry out the sick and place them on beds and pallets, so that when Peter came, even his shadow might fall on some of them.

Also the crowd from the surrounding cities of Jerusalem was coming together, bringing the sick and those troubled by unclean spirits, and all of them were being healed.

But the high priest rose up, and all those with him, who were the party of the Sadducees, were filled with zeal.

And they laid hands on the apostles and put them in public custody.

But an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors by night and led them out, saying,

Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.

When they heard this, they entered the temple at dawn and were teaching. The high priest and those with him arrived, called together the council and the whole senate of the sons of Israel, and sent to the prison to bring them out.

But the attendants who came did not find them in the prison, and having returned they reported.

Saying, We found the prison locked securely with all safety, and the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened, we found no one inside.

Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were perplexed about what might happen to them.

But someone came and reported to them, Look, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people.

Then the commander went with the officers and brought them out, not by force, because they feared the people might stone them.

And having brought them, they stood them before the council. And the high priest questioned them.

Saying, By command we strictly charged you not to teach in this name, and look, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you want to bring on us the blood of this man.

But Peter and the apostles answered, It is necessary to obey God rather than men.

The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging on a tree.

God exalted him as leader and savior at his right hand, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.

And we are witnesses of these words, and the Spirit, the Holy one, whom God gave to those who obey him.

But those who heard it were cut to the quick and wanted to kill them.

But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a respected teacher of the law for all the people, stood up in the council, ordered the men to be put outside for a short time,

And he said to them, Men of Israel, be careful about these men and what you are about to do.

For before these days Theudas rose up, claiming to be someone, to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined. He was killed, and all who followed him were scattered and came to nothing.

After him, Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census and led away a crowd after him. He also perished, and all who were persuaded by him were scattered.

And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them be; (because if this plan or this work is from people, it will be destroyed,

But if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them; otherwise, you may even be found fighting against God. And they were persuaded by him,

And having called the apostles, they beat them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and released them.

They then went away rejoicing because they had been considered worthy to suffer dishonor for the name.

Every day, both in the temple and at home, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the Messiah Jesus.
