Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, behold, magi came from the east to Jerusalem.

saying, Where is the one born king of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.

Now when King Herod heard this, he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him,

And having gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired from them where the Messiah is born.

They said to him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written through the prophet.

And you, Bethlehem land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you will come a leader who will shepherd my people Israel.

Then Herod secretly called the magi and carefully inquired from them the time when the star appeared,

And having sent them to Bethlehem, he said, Go and search carefully about the child; and when you find him, report to me, so that I also may come and worship him.

Those who heard the king went, and behold, the star which they saw in the east went before them until it came and stood over where the child was.

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with very great joy.

And having come into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and falling down they worshiped him, and opening their treasures they presented to him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their country by another way.

After they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. For Herod is about to search for the child to destroy him.

But he, having risen, took the child and his mother by night and departed into Egypt,

And he was there until the death of Herod, so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, From Egypt I called my son.

Then Herod, seeing that he was mocked by the magi, became very angry, and sending, he killed all the boys in Bethlehem and in all its borders from two years old and under, according to the time he had carefully determined from the magi.

Then was fulfilled what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying:

A voice was heard in Ramah, a loud weeping and mourning; Rachel weeping for her children, and she did not want to be comforted because they are not.

Now when Herod had died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream in Egypt.

saying, Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the life of the child are dead.

But he having risen took the child and his mother and entered into the land of Israel.

But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there; and having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the regions of Galilee,

And coming, he lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken through the prophets would be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.
