Do you not know, brothers, for I am speaking to those who know the law, that the law has authority over a person as long as he lives?

For a married woman is bound by law to the living husband; but if the husband dies, she is released from the law of the husband.

So then, while the husband lives, the wife is bound by law as a adulteress if she becomes another man's. But if the husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress if she becomes another man's.

So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of the Messiah, in order that you might belong to another, who was raised from the dead, so that we might bear fruit for God.

For when we were in the flesh, the passions of sins, which were through the law, were working in our members to bear fruit for death.

But now we have been released from the law, having died to that by which we were held, so that we serve in newness of spirit and not in oldness of letter.

What then shall we say? Is the law sin? Absolutely not. But I would not have known sin except through the law, for I would not have known desire except that the law said, You shall not desire.

But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me every desire; for apart from the law sin is dead.

But I was alive without the law once; and when the commandment came, sin came to life,

But I died, and the commandment that was for life, this became for me death.

For sin, having taken opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.

So then the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

So then, did what is good become death to me? Absolutely not. But sin, in order that sin might be shown to be sin through the good, worked death in me, so that sin might become exceedingly sinful through the commandment.

For we know that the law is spiritual; but I am fleshly, sold under sin.

For what I do, I do not understand; for I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.

But if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law that it is good.

But now it is no longer I who am working it, but sin dwelling in me.

For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present with me, but the doing of the good is not.

For I do not do the good that I want, but the evil that I do not want, this I practice.

But if I do what I do not want, I no longer work it, but sin dwelling in me does.

So I find the law that when I want to do good, evil is present with me.

For I delight in the law of God according to the inner person,

But I see another law in my members opposing the law of my mind and capturing me in the law of sin that is in my members.

Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?

Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh the law of sin.
