And behold, a man of God came from Judah by the word of the Lord to Bethel, and Jeroboam was standing by the altar to burn incense.

And he called out against the altar in a word of the Lord and said, altar, altar, thus says the Lord: behold, a son is born to the house of David, Josiah is his name, and he shall sacrifice on you the priests of the high places, the ones burning incense on you, and human bones he shall burn on you.

And he gave on that day a sign, saying, This is the word which the Lord has spoken, saying, Behold, the altar shall be broken apart, and the fatness that is upon it shall be poured out.

And it came to pass, as Jeroboam the king heard the words of the man of God, who had called out against the altar that was in Bethel, that the king stretched out his hand from the altar, saying, Seize him. And behold, his hand, which he stretched out against him, withered, and he was not able to turn it back to himself.

And the altar was broken apart, and the fatness was poured out from the altar, according to the sign that the man of God gave by the word of the Lord.

And King Jeroboam said to the man of God, Pray before the face of the Lord your God, and let my hand return to me. And the man of God prayed before the face of the Lord, and he turned the king’s hand back to him, and it became as before.

And the king spoke to the man of God, Enter with me into the house and dine, and I will give you a gift

And the man of God said to the king, Even if you were to give me half of your house, I would not go in with you, nor would I by any means eat bread or by any means drink water in this place.

For so the Lord commanded me by word, saying, You shall not eat bread and you shall not drink water, and you shall not return by the way in which you went.

And he went away by another way and did not return by the way by which he had come into Bethel

And one old prophet was dwelling in Bethel, and his sons came and reported to him all the deeds which the man of God did on that day in Bethel, and the words which he spoke to the king, and they turned the face of their father away.

And their father spoke to them, saying, By what way has he gone? And his sons show him the way by which the man of God, the one who came out of Judah, went up.

And he said to his sons, Saddle the donkey for me; and they saddled the donkey for him, and he mounted on it.

And he went after the man of God and found him sitting under an oak, and said to him, Are you the man of God who came out of Judah? And he said to him, I am.

And he said to him, Come with me and eat bread.

And he said, I am not able to turn back with you, nor shall I eat bread nor drink water in this place.

For thus the Lord has commanded me by word, saying, You shall not eat bread there and you shall not drink water there and you shall not return by the way in which you went in it

And he said to him, I also am a prophet, as you are, and an angel has spoken to me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back to yourself into your house, and let him eat bread and drink water. And he lied to him.

And he brought him back, and he ate bread and drank water in his house.

And it came to pass, as they were sitting at the table, that the word of the Lord came to the prophet who had brought him back.

And he said to the man of God who had come from Judah, saying, Thus says the Lord: Because you have provoked the word of the Lord and did not keep the commandment which the Lord your God commanded you.

and you returned and ate bread and drank water in this place, of which he spoke to you, saying, You shall not eat bread and you shall not drink water; your body shall surely not enter into the tomb of your fathers

And it came to pass after he had eaten bread and drunk water, that he saddled the donkey for him and turned back.

And he went away and found him; and a lion was in the way and killed him, and his body was thrown down in the way, and the donkey was standing beside it, and the lion was standing beside the body

And behold, men passing by saw the corpse thrown on the road, and the lion was standing beside the corpse, and they entered and spoke in the city where the old prophet was dwelling in it.

And the one who had turned him back from the way heard it, and he said, This is the man of God who embittered the word of the Lord.

And he went and found his body thrown down in the way, and the donkey and the lion were standing beside the body, and the lion did not eat the body of the man of God and did not crush the donkey.

And the prophet took up the body of the man of God and laid it on the donkey, and brought him back to the city, the prophet, to bury him.

in his tomb, and they lamented for him, Woe, brother

And it came to pass after his cutting, and he said to his sons, saying, If I die, bury me in this tomb in which the man of God has been buried in it; beside his bones place me, so that my bones may be saved with his bones.

For the word that he spoke in the word of the Lord concerning the altar that is in Bethel and concerning the high houses that are in Samaria shall surely come to be.

And after this word Jeroboam did not turn back from his wickedness, and he turned and made from among the people priests of high places; whoever was willing, he filled his hand, and he became a priest for the high places.

And this thing became sin to the house of Jeroboam and for destruction and for obliteration from the face of the land
