And the Lord said to Samuel, How long do you mourn over Saul, and I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and come, I will send you to Jesse, to Bethlehem, because I have seen among his sons for me to reign.

And Samuel said, How shall I go? and Saul will hear and will kill me. And the Lord said, Take a heifer of the herd in your hand, and you shall say, I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.

And you shall call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will make known to you what you shall do, and you shall anoint whomever I may say to you.

And Samuel did all that the Lord spoke to him, and he came to Bethlehem, and the elders of the city were astonished at his meeting, and said, Is your entrance peace, O seer?

And he said, I have come to sacrifice to the Lord in peace; sanctify yourselves and rejoice with me today. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and he called them to the sacrifice.

And it came to pass, when they entered, that he saw Eliab and said, Surely, before the Lord is his anointed one.

And the Lord said to Samuel, Do not look at his appearance nor at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for not as a man sees does God see, because man will see into the face, but God will see into the heart.

And Jesse called Abinadab, and he passed before Samuel, and he said, Neither this one has the Lord chosen.

And Jesse brought Shammah past, and he said, And in this one too the Lord has not chosen.

And Jesse brought his seven sons before Samuel, and Samuel said, The Lord has not chosen among these.

And Samuel said to Jesse, The little boys have failed. And he said, Still, the little one, behold, he is shepherding among the flock. And Samuel said to Jesse, Send and take him, for we shall certainly not lie down until he comes here.

And he sent and brought him in, and he was ruddy, with beauty of eyes, and good in appearance to the Lord. And the Lord said to Samuel, Rise and anoint David, for this one is good.

And Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers, and the spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day and onward; and Samuel arose and went away to Armathaim.

And a spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.

And Saul’s servants said to him, Behold now, an evil spirit from the Lord is choking you.

Let your servants now speak before you, and let them seek for our lord a man knowing how to play the lyre, and it shall be when an evil spirit is upon you that he will play on his lyre, and it will be good for you, and he will give you rest.

And Saul said to his servants, Look now for me a man who plays well and bring him in to me

And one of his servants answered and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, and he knowing how to play the harp, and the man is prudent and a man of war, and wise in speech, and a good-looking man, and the Lord is with him.

And Saul sent messengers to Jesse, saying, Send to me your son David, who is among your flock.

And Jesse took a homer of loaves and a skin of wine and one young goat, and sent by the hand of David his son to Saul

And David came in to Saul and stood before him, and he loved him exceedingly, and he became to him the one carrying his gear.

And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David now stand before me, because he has found favor in my eyes.

And it happened, when an evil spirit was on Saul, David would take the lyre and play with his hand, and Saul would be refreshed and it would be good for him, and the evil spirit would depart from him.
