And Rehoboam went to Shechem, for to Shechem all Israel was coming to make him king.

And it happened, when Jeroboam son of Nebat heard, and he too was in Egypt, because he had fled from before Solomon the king, and Jeroboam lived in Egypt, that Jeroboam returned from Egypt

And they sent and called him, and Jeroboam came, and all the assembly of Israel, to Rehoboam, saying,

Your father made our yoke harsh, and now lighten the hard servitude of your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you

And he said to them, Go until three days, and come to me again. And the people went away.

And King Rehoboam gathered the elders who had stood before Solomon his father while he was alive, saying, How do you counsel to answer this people a word?

And they spoke to him, saying, If today you become good to this people, and are pleased, and speak to them good words, then they will be your servants all the days.

And he abandoned the counsel of the elders who had counseled him, and he took counsel with the boys who had been brought up with him, those standing before him

And he said to them, What do you advise, and I shall answer a word to this people, who spoke to me, saying, Let loose from the yoke which your father put on us?

And the young men who had been brought up with him spoke to him, saying, Thus you shall speak to the people who spoke to you, saying, Your father made our yoke heavy, and you, let it be looser from us; thus you shall say, My little finger is thicker than the loins of my father.

And now my father disciplined you with a heavy yoke, and I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.

And Jeroboam came and all the people to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king had spoken, saying, Return to me on the third day.

And the king answered harshly, and King Rehoboam abandoned the counsel of the elders.

And he spoke to them according to the counsel of the younger men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to it; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.

And the king did not listen to the people, because there was a turnabout from God, saying, the Lord established his word, which he spoke by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite concerning Jeroboam son of Nebat

And all Israel, because their king did not listen, and the people answered to the king, saying, What portion do we have in David, and inheritance in the son of Jesse? To your tents, Israel; now see to your house, David. And all Israel went to their tents.

And the men of Israel who were dwelling in the cities of Judah, and Rehoboam reigned over them

And King Rehoboam sent Adoniram, the one over the tribute, and the sons of Israel stoned him with stones, and he died. And King Rehoboam hurried to go up into the chariot to flee to Jerusalem.

And Israel rebelled against the house of David to this day.
