And as Esdras prayed and as he confessed, weeping and praying before the house of God, a very great assembly was gathered to him out of Israel, men and women and young men, because the people wept, and he lifted up, weeping

And Shechaniah son of Jehiel, from the sons of Elam, answered and said to Esdras, We have acted faithlessly against our God and have taken foreign women from the peoples of the land; and now there is hope for Israel concerning this.

And now let us make a covenant with our God to send away all the women and the things born from them, according as you wish. Rise up and admonish them with the commandments of our God, and let it be according to the law.

Arise, for the matter is upon you, and we are with you; be strong and do it.

And Esdras arose and made the leaders, the priests, and the Levites, and all Israel, swear to do according to this word, and they swore.

And Esdras rose up from before the house of God and went to the chamber of Johanan son of Eliashib, and he went there; he ate no bread and drank no water, because he mourned over the unfaithfulness of the exile.

And they made a proclamation in Judah and in Jerusalem to all the sons of the captivity to gather together in Jerusalem

And everyone who does not come within three days, according to the counsel of the rulers and the elders, all his property shall be devoted to destruction, and he himself shall be separated from the assembly of the exile.

And all the men of Judah and Benjamin were gathered together in Jerusalem within three days; this was the ninth month, on the twentieth of the month; and all the people sat in the broad place of the house of God because of the matter and because of the winter.

And Ezra the priest arose and said to them, You have acted unfaithfully and have taken foreign wives to add to the trespass of Israel.

And now give praise to the Lord, the God of your fathers, and do what is pleasing before him, and be separated from the peoples of the land and from the foreign women.

And all the assembly answered and said, Great is this matter of yours for us to do.

but the people are many and the season is wintry, and there is no strength to stand outside, and the work is not for one day and not for two, because we have multiplied to do wrong in this matter

Let our rulers now stand with the whole assembly, and all who are in our cities, whoever has taken foreign wives; let them come at appointed times, and with them the elders of city by city and the judges, to turn away the wrath of the anger of our God from us concerning this matter.

Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jazia son of Tekoa were with me concerning this, and Mesullam and Sabbatai the Levite helping them

And the sons of the captivity did so, and Ezra the priest and the men, heads of families, were appointed by the house, and all by names, because they returned on the first day of the tenth month to inquire into the matter

And they had finished with all the men who had taken foreign wives by the first day of the first month.

And there were found from the sons of the priests who had taken foreign wives, from the sons of Jeshua son of Josedek and his brothers, Maaseiah and Eliezer and Jarib and Gedaliah

And they gave their hand to put away their wives, and for their trespass a ram from the sheep for their trespass.

And from the sons of Immer, Hanani and Zabdia.

And from the sons of Harim: Maaseiah and Elijah and Shemaiah and Jehiel and Uzziah

And from the sons of Phashur: Elihoenai, Maaseiah, and Ishmael, and Nethanel, and Jozabad, and Elasah.

And from the Levites: Jozabad and Samu and Kolia, he himself the Kolite, and Phathaea and Iodom and Eliezer

And from the singers, Elisaph; and from the gatekeepers, Sellem and Telem and Odue.

And from Israel: from the sons of Phoros, Ramia and Iazia and Melchia and Meamin and Eleazar and Asabia and Banaia

And from the sons of Elam: Mattaniah and Zechariah and Jaaiel and Obadiah and Jeremoth and Elijah

And from the sons of Zathua: Elioenai, Elishub, Matthaniah, and Jarmoth, and Zabad, and Oziza.

And from the sons of Babi, Johanan, Hananiah, and Zabbu, Othali.

And from the sons of Banui: Meshullam, Malluch, Adaiah, Jashub, and Saluiah, and Ramoth.

And from the sons of Pahath-moab: Edene, Halel, Bania, Massea, Matania, Beselel, and Banoui, and Manasseh

And from the sons of Harim: Eliezer, Jeshiah, Melchiah, Shemaiah, Simeon.

Benjamin, Malluch, Samaria

And from the sons of Hasum: Matani, Matathah, Zabad, Eliphalet, Jerami, Manasseh, Shemei.

from the sons of Bani, Moadi, Amram, Uel

Banaiah, Badaia, Chelia

Uiechoa, Ieramoth, Eliasib

Mathaniah, Mattanai, and they did.

the sons of Banoui and the sons of Semei

And Selemaia and Nathan and Adaia

Machnadabou, Sesi, Sarou

Ezreel and Selemi and Samaria

And Shallum, Amariah, Joseph

From the sons of Nabu: Iiēl, Mathathia, Sedem, Zambina, Iadai, and Joēl, and Banaia.

All these took foreign women and begot sons from them.
