And David said, I will do mercy with Hanun son of Nahash, just as his father did mercy with me; and David sent to comfort him by means of his servants concerning his father. And the servants of David came into the land of the sons of Ammon.

And the princes of the sons of Ammon said to Annon their lord, Is it not because David honored your father before you that he sent to you comforters? But not that they might search out the city and spy it out, and that David sent his servants to you in order to inspect it?

And they reported to David concerning the men, and he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly disgraced. And the king said, Sit in Jericho until your beards have grown, and then you shall return.

And the sons of Ammon saw that the people of David were disgraced, and the sons of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, twenty thousand foot soldiers, and the king of Maacah, a thousand men, and Istob, twelve thousand men.

And Joab saw that the battle was set against him frontally, from before and from behind, and he chose from all the young men of Israel, and they drew up in battle order opposite Syria.

And the sons of Ammon saw that Syria had fled, and they fled from before Abishai and entered into the city, and Joab returned from the sons of Ammon, and they came to Jerusalem.

And Syria fled from before Israel, and David killed from Syria seven hundred chariots and forty thousand horsemen, and he struck Shobach the commander of his force, and he died there.

And all the kings, the servants of Hadadezer, saw that they had been struck before Israel, and they defected with Israel and served them, and Syria was afraid to save the sons of Ammon anymore.
