And it happened at the turning of the year, at the time of the going out of the kings, that David sent Joab and his servants with him and all Israel, and they ravaged the sons of Ammon and laid siege to Rabbath; and David sat in Jerusalem.

And it came to pass toward evening, and David rose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king’s house, and he saw a woman bathing from the roof; and the woman was very beautiful in appearance.

And David sent and sought the woman, and said, Is not this Bathsheba, daughter of Eliab, wife of Uriah the Hittite?

And David sent messengers and took her, and he went in to her and lay with her, and she was purifying herself from her uncleanness, and she returned to her house

And the woman conceived, and she sent and reported to David and said, I am with child.

And David sent to Joab, saying, Send Uriah the Hittite to me. And Joab sent Uriah to David.

And Uriah came, and he entered to him, and David asked about the peace of Joab and about the peace of the people and about the peace of the war.

And David said to Uriah, Go down to your house and wash your feet. And Uriah went out from the house of the king, and there went out after him a gift from the king.

And Uriah slept beside the door of the king with the servants of his lord, and he did not go down to his house.

And they reported to David, saying, that Uriah did not go down to his house. And David said to Uriah, Are you not coming from a journey? Why is it that you did not go down to your house?

And Uriah said to David, The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are encamping on the face of the field, and shall I go into my house to eat and to drink and to lie down with my wife? As your soul lives, if I do this thing.

And David said to Uriah, Sit here also today and tomorrow I will send you away. And Uriah sat in Jerusalem on that day and on the next day.

And David called him, and he ate before him and drank and he made him drunk, and he went out in the evening to lie down on his bed with the servants of his lord, and he did not go down to his house.

And it came to be in the morning, and David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah.

And he wrote in the letter, saying, Bring Uriah opposite the forceful battle, and you shall turn back from behind him, and he will be struck and die.

And it happened when Joab was watching over the city, that he put Uriah in the place where he knew that men of might were there.

And the men of the city went out and fought with Joab, and some of the people fell, from the servants of David, and Uriah the Hittite also died.

And Joab sent and reported to the king all the words of the war.

And he commanded the messenger, saying, When you have finished speaking all the matters of the war to the king,

And it shall be, if the anger of the king rises and he says to you, Why did you draw near to the city to fight? Did you not know that they will shoot from above the wall?

Who struck Abimelech son of Jerubbaal? Did not a woman throw on him a millstone fragment from above the wall, and he died in Thebez? Why did you draw near to the wall? And you shall say also, Uriah your servant the Hittite is dead.

And the messenger of Joab went to the king into Jerusalem, and came and reported to David all that Joab had reported to him, all the words of the war. And David was angered against Joab and said to the messenger, Why did you draw near to the city to fight? Did you not know that you would be struck from the wall? Who struck Abimelech son of Jerobaal? Did not a woman cast upon him a piece of a millstone from the wall, and he died in Thebez? Why did you draw near to the wall?

And the messenger said to David, The men prevailed against us and came out against us into the field, and we were against them as far as the gate’s door.

And the archers shot at your servants from above the wall, and some of the king’s servants died, and also your servant Uriah the Hittite died.

And David said to the messenger, Thus you shall say to Joab: Let not this matter be evil in your eyes, for the sword devours, now thus and now thus; strengthen your battle against the city and tear it down, and strengthen him.

And the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband had died, and she lamented her husband.

And the mourning passed, and David sent and gathered her into his house, and she became to him as a wife, and she bore him a son. And the thing that David did appeared evil in the eyes of the Lord.
