Daniel (Theodotion) 1 — Rahlfs Septuagint

ἔτει τρίτῳ τῆς βασιλείας Ιωακιμ βασιλέως Ιουδα ἦλθεν Ναβουχοδονοσορ βασιλεὺς Βαβυλῶνος εἰς Ιερουσαλημ καὶ ἐπολιόρκει αὐτήν

In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.

And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, and some of the vessels of the house of God, and he brought them into the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

And the king said to Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to bring in from the sons of the captivity of Israel and from the seed of the kingdom and from the Pharathim,

young men in whom there is no blemish and handsome in appearance and understanding in every wisdom and knowing knowledge and discerning prudence and in whom there is strength to stand in the house of the king and to teach them the writing and language of the Chaldeans

And the king assigned to them the daily portion day by day from the king’s table and from the wine of his drinking, and to nourish them three years, and after these things to stand before the king

ἐγένετο ἐν αὐτοῖς ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν Ιουδα Δανιηλ καὶ Ανανιας καὶ Μισαηλ καὶ Αζαριας

And among them were, from the sons of Judah, Daniel and Ananiah and Misael and Azariah

And the chief eunuch gave them names: to Daniel, Baltasar, and to Ananias, Sedrach, and to Mishael, Misach, and to Azariah, Abdenago

And Daniel put it on his heart that he would not be defiled by the table of the king and by the wine of his drink, and he requested of the chief eunuch that he would not be defiled.

ἔδωκεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν Δανιηλ εἰς ἔλεον καὶ εἰς οἰκτιρμὸν ἐνώπιον τοῦ ἀρχιευνούχου

And God gave Daniel into favor and into compassion before the chief eunuch.

And the chief eunuch said to Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who appointed your food and your drink, lest he see your faces more downcast than the children your age, and you condemn my head to the king.

εἶπεν Δανιηλ πρὸς Αμελσαδ ὃν κατέστησεν ὁ ἀρχιευνοῦχος ἐπὶ Δανιηλ Ανανιαν Μισαηλ Αζαριαν

And Daniel said to Amalṣad, whom the chief eunuch had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, Azariah

δὴ τοὺς παῖδάς σου ἡμέρας δέκα καὶ δότωσαν ἡμῖν ἀπὸ τῶν σπερμάτων καὶ φαγόμεθα καὶ ὕδωρ πιόμεθα

Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us from the seeds, and we shall eat and we shall drink water.

And let our appearances and the appearances of the young men who eat the table of the king be seen before you, and as you may see, do with your servants.

14

εἰσήκουσεν αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπείρασεν αὐτοὺς ἡμέρας δέκα

And he listened to them and tried them for ten days.

15

And after the end of the ten days their appearances were seen to be good and stronger in their flesh than the boys who were eating the king’s table

16

ἐγένετο Αμελσαδ ἀναιρούμενος τὸ δεῖπνον αὐτῶν καὶ τὸν οἶνον τοῦ πόματος αὐτῶν καὶ ἐδίδου αὐτοῖς σπέρματα

And Amelsad became taking away their supper and the wine of their drink, and he was giving them seeds.

And these young boys, the four of them, God gave to them understanding and prudence in every writing and wisdom, and Daniel understood in every vision and dreams

18

μετὰ τὸ τέλος τῶν ἡμερῶν ὧν εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς εἰσαγαγεῖν αὐτούς καὶ εἰσήγαγεν αὐτοὺς ὁ ἀρχιευνοῦχος ἐναντίον Ναβουχοδονοσορ

And after the end of the days which the king said to bring them in, the chief eunuch brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar

And the king spoke with them, and among all of them there was not found any like Daniel and Hananiah and Mishael and Azariah, and they stood before the king.

20

And in every matter of wisdom and knowledge that the king sought from them, he found them ten times better than all the enchanters and the magicians who were in all his kingdom.

21

ἐγένετο Δανιηλ ἕως ἔτους ἑνὸς Κύρου τοῦ βασιλέως

And Daniel continued until the first year of Cyrus the king
