And Jacob lived in the land where his father sojourned, in the land of Canaan.

And these are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was shepherding with his brothers the sheep, being a youth, with the sons of Bilhah and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives; and Joseph brought an evil report to Israel their father.

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons, because he was the son of his old age; and he made for him a variegated tunic.

But when his brothers saw that his father loved him more than all his sons, they hated him and were not able to speak to him anything peaceful.

And Joseph, having dreamed a dream, reported it to his brothers.

And he said to them, Hear this dream which I dreamed.

I thought we were binding sheaves in the middle of the field, and my sheaf stood up and was set upright, and your sheaves turned around and bowed down to my sheaf.

And his brothers said to him, Shall you indeed reign over us, or shall you indeed rule over us? And they added still to hate him because of his dreams and because of his words.

And he saw another dream and told it to his father and to his brothers, and he said, Behold, I dreamed another dream: as it were the sun and the moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.

And his father rebuked him and said to him, What is this dream which you dreamed? Shall indeed we come, I and your mother and your brothers, to bow down to you on the earth?

And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the word.

And his brothers went to pasture their father’s sheep in Shechem

And Israel said to Joseph, Are not your brothers shepherding in Shechem? Come, I will send you to them. And he said to him, Behold, I am.

And Israel said to him, Go, see whether your brothers and the sheep are well, and report to me. And he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

And a man found him wandering in the field, and the man asked him, saying, What are you seeking?

And he said, I seek my brothers; tell me where they are pasturing.

And the man said to him, They have departed from here, for I heard them saying, Let us go to Dothaim. And Joseph went after his brothers and found them in Dothaim.

And they saw him from far away before he drew near to them, and they plotted to kill him.

And each one said to his brother, Behold, that dreamer is coming.

Now therefore come, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits, and we will say, An evil beast has devoured him, and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

But Reuben, having heard, rescued him out of their hands and said, We shall not strike him at the soul.

And Reuben said to them, Do not shed blood; cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him, so that he might rescue him out of their hands and restore him to his father.

And it happened when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped Joseph of the variegated tunic that was on him

And taking him, they threw him into the pit; and the pit was empty, it had no water.

And they sat down to eat bread, and lifting up their eyes they saw, and behold, travelers, Ishmaelites, were coming from Gilead, and their camels were bearing spices and resin and ladanum; and they were going to bring them down into Egypt.

And Judah said to his brothers, What profit is it if we kill our brother and hide his blood?

Come, let us sell him to these Ishmaelites, and let not our hands be upon him, because he is our brother and our flesh. And his brothers listened.

And the men, the Midianites, the merchants, passed by, and they drew up and brought up Joseph out of the pit, and they sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of gold, and they brought Joseph down into Egypt

And Reuben returned to the pit, and he does not see Joseph in the pit, and he tore his garments.

And he returned to his brothers and said, The boy is not, and I, where am I to go still?

And taking the tunic of Joseph, they slaughtered a kid of goats and stained the tunic with the blood

And they sent the variegated tunic and brought it to their father, and they said, We found this; recognize whether it is your son’s tunic or not.

And he recognized it and said, It is my son’s tunic; an evil beast has devoured him; a beast has seized Joseph.

And Jacob tore his garments, and put sackcloth around his waist, and mourned for his son many days.

Then all his sons and his daughters gathered together and came to comfort him, but he was not willing to be comforted, saying, For I shall go down to my son mourning to Hades. And his father wept for him.

And the Midianites sold Joseph into Egypt to Potiphar, Pharaoh’s eunuch, chief cook.
