And the famine grew severe upon the land

And it happened, when they had finished eating the grain that they had brought out of Egypt, that their father said to them again, Having gone, buy us a little food.

And Judah said to him, saying, The man solemnly warned us, saying, You shall not see my face unless your younger brother is with you.

If therefore you send our brother with us, we will go down and buy food for you.

But if you do not send our brother with us, we shall not go, for the man said to us, saying, You shall not see my face unless your younger brother is with you.

And Israel said, Why did you do me wrong by telling the man whether you have a brother?

But they said, The man surely asked us about ourselves and our family, saying, Does your father still live? Is there a brother to you? And we reported to him according to this questioning; we did not know whether he would say to us, Bring your brother.

And Judah said to Israel his father, Send the boy with me, and rising we will go, so that we may live and not die, both we and you and our household.

But I will be surety for him; from my hand seek him; if I do not bring him to you and set him before you, I will be guilty before you all the days.

For if we had not delayed, we would already have returned twice.

Then Israel their father said to them, If it is thus, do this: take from the fruits of the land in your vessels and carry down to the man gifts of resin and honey, incense and storax and pistachio nuts.

And take double money in your hands; the money that was returned in your bags, return it with you; perhaps it is an oversight.

And take your brother, and rise up, go down to the man.

And my God may give you favor before the man, and may send away your brother, the one, and Benjamin; and as for me, I am bereaved, I am bereaved.

And the men took these gifts and the double money in their hands, and Benjamin; and they rose up and went down into Egypt and stood before Joseph

And Joseph saw them and Benjamin his brother, his own mother’s son, and he said to the one over his house, Bring the men into the house and slaughter animals and prepare, for the men will dine with me at noon.

And the man did as Joseph said, and brought the men into Joseph’s house.

But the men, when they saw that they had been brought into Joseph’s house, said, Because of the silver returned in our sacks at the first we are being brought in, to accuse us and to lay hands on us, to take us as slaves and our donkeys.

Then they came near to the man who was over Joseph’s house and spoke to him at the gateway of the house

and saying, We beg you, lord, we came down at the first to buy food

And it happened when we came to lodge, and we opened our sacks, and behold, each man’s money was in his sack, our money in full weight; we have brought it back now in our hands.

and other silver we have brought with us to buy food; we do not know who put the silver into our sacks of money

And he said to them, Peace be to you; do not fear. Your God and the God of your fathers gave you treasures in your pouches; and your silver I have received with approval. And he brought Simeon out to them.

And he brought water to wash their feet, and he gave fodder to their donkeys

And they prepared the gifts until Joseph came at noon, for they heard that he was about to dine there.

And Joseph entered into the house, and they brought to him the gifts which they had in their hands into the house, and they bowed down to him on their face to the ground.

And he asked them how you are, and said to them, Is your father, the older one, whom you spoke of, still well? Does he still live?

And they said, Your servant our father is well; he is still alive. And he said, Blessed is that man to God. And bowing down they bowed to him.

And Joseph, lifting up his eyes, saw Benjamin, his brother, his full brother, and he said, Is this your younger brother, whom you said to me to bring? And he said, May God have mercy on you, child.

And Joseph was troubled, for his inward parts were stirred up because of his brother, and he sought to weep; and entering into the chamber, he wept there

And after washing his face, he went out and restrained himself, and said, Set bread on the table.

And they set before him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, for the Egyptians were not able to eat bread with the Hebrews, for it is an abomination to the Egyptians.

And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the younger according to his youth; and the men were astonished, each one toward his brother.

And they carried portions from him to them, and the portion of Benjamin was magnified above the portions of all fivefold, above theirs; and they drank and became drunk with him
