And Joseph commanded the one over his house, saying, Fill the men’s sacks with food as much as they are able to carry, and put each one’s money at the mouth of the sack.

And you shall put my silver cup into the pouch of the younger, and the price of his grain. And it came to be according to Joseph’s word, as he said.

At dawn it grew light, and the men were sent away, they and their donkeys.

And when they had gone out of the city, they had not gone far, and Joseph said to the one over his house, Rise up, pursue after the men, and you shall overtake them, and you shall say to them, Why is it that you have repaid evil for good?

Why have you stolen my silver cup? Is not this the one in which my lord drinks, and he himself divines by it? You have done evil in what you have done.

And having found them, he said to them according to these words:

But they said to him, Why does my lord speak according to these words? Far be it from your servants to do according to this word.

If indeed the silver which we found in our sacks we returned to you out of the land of Canaan, how then should we steal from the house of your lord silver or gold?

With whomever the cup of your servants is found, let him die, and we also shall be servants to our lord.

And he said, Now also, as you say, so it shall be: the man with whom the cup shall be found, he himself shall be my servant; but you shall be clean.

And they hastened and each man lowered his sack to the ground, and each man opened his sack

And he searched, beginning from the eldest until he came upon the youngest, and he found the cup in Benjamin’s pouch

And they tore their garments, and each put his sack on his donkey, and they turned back to the city.

And Judah and his brothers entered to Joseph while he was still there, and they fell before him to the ground

And Joseph said to them, What is this deed that you have done? Did you not know that a man such as I indeed divines by divination?

And Judah said, What shall we answer to the lord, or what shall we speak, or what shall we be justified? But God has found the injustice of your servants; behold, we are servants to our lord, both we and he with whom the cup was found.

But Joseph said, May it not be for me to do this thing; the man with whom the cup was found, he himself shall be my slave; but you go up in peace to your father.

Then Judah, drawing near to him, said, I beg, my lord, let your servant speak a word before you, and do not be angry with your servant, because you are as Pharaoh.

My lord, you asked your servants, saying, Have you a father or a brother?

And we said to our lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of old age, younger to him; and his brother died, and he alone was left to his mother, and his father loved him.

And you said to your servants, Bring him down to me, and I will care for him.

And we said to our lord, The child will not be able to leave the father; but if he leaves the father, he will die.

But you said to your servants, If your younger brother does not come down with you, you shall no longer add to see my face again.

And it came to pass when we went up to your servant our father, then we reported to him the words of the lord.

And our father said to us, Go back, buy us a little food.

But we said, We shall not be able to go down; but if our younger brother goes down with us, we shall go down, for we shall not be able to see the face of the man unless our younger brother is with us.

And your servant our father said to us, You know that my wife bore me two.

And the one went out from me, and you said that he has become meat-devoured, and I have not seen him still, and now

If then you also take this one from my face, and misfortune happens to him on the way, you will bring my gray hair down with sorrow to Hades.

Now therefore, if I go in to your servant my father, and the child is not with us, and his soul is hanging on this one’s soul,

and it shall be, when he sees that the child is not with us, he will die, and your servants will bring down the gray hair of your servant our father with pain to Hades

For your servant became surety for the child with my father, saying, If I do not bring him to you and set him before you, I shall be guilty before my father all the days

Now therefore let me remain, your servant, in place of the boy, a slave of my lord; but let the boy go up with his brothers

For how shall I go up to my father, the child not being with us, lest I see the evils that will find my father?
