And the sons of Israel committed a very great breach of faith and took from the devoted thing, and Achar son of Carmi son of Zabdi son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, took from the devoted thing, and the Lord was angered with anger against the sons of Israel

And Joshua sent men to Ai, which is by Bethel, saying, Spy out Ai. And the men went up and spied out Ai.

And they returned to Joshua and said to him, Let not all the people go up, but let about two thousand or three thousand men go up and besiege the city; do not bring up all the people there, for they are few.

And about three thousand men went up, and they fled from before the face of the men of Ai.

And the men of Ai killed from them thirty-six men and pursued them from the gate and crushed them on the descent, and the heart of the people was terrified and became as water

And Joshua tore his garments, and Joshua fell upon the ground on his face before the Lord until evening, he and the elders of Israel, and they put dust on their heads.

And Joshua said, I beg you, Lord, why did you bring across your servant this people the Jordan, to give us over into the Amorite’s hand, to destroy us? And if we had remained and settled by the Jordan,

And what shall I say, since Israel has turned the neck before its enemy?

And the Canaanite and all the inhabitants of the land, when they hear, will surround us and will wipe us out from the land; and what will you do for your great name?

And the Lord said to Joshua, Rise up; why is it that you have fallen thus on your face?

The people has sinned and has transgressed the covenant which I made with them, and, having stolen from the devoted things, they put it into their vessels.

the sons of Israel shall by no means be able to stand before their enemies; they shall turn the neck before their enemies, because they have become devoted to destruction; I will no longer continue to be with you, unless you remove the devoted thing from among yourselves

Rise up, sanctify the people, and say, Be sanctified for tomorrow; thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: the devoted thing is among you; you shall not be able to stand before your enemies until you remove the devoted thing from among you.

And you shall be gathered all in the morning by tribes, and it shall be the tribe which the Lord may show, you shall bring near by clans, and the clan which the Lord may show, you shall bring near by house, and the house which the Lord may show, you shall bring near by man

And whoever is indicated shall be burned with fire, and all that is his, because he has transgressed the covenant of the Lord and has done lawlessness in Israel.

And Joshua rose early and brought the people near by tribes, and the tribe of Judah was indicated.

And he was brought near by clans, and the clan of Zerah was indicated, and he was brought near by man

And Achar son of Zambri, son of Zara, was shown.

And Joshua said to Achar, Give glory today to the Lord God of Israel, and give the confession, and tell me what you did, and do not hide it from me.

And Achar answered Joshua and said, Truly I have sinned before the Lord God of Israel; thus and thus I did.

I saw among the spoil a fine multicolored mantle, and two hundred shekels of silver, and one tongue of gold weighing fifty shekels, and when I considered them I took them, and behold, they are hidden in the ground in my tent, and the silver is hidden underneath them

And Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent, to the camp, and these things were hidden in the tent, and the silver beneath them

And they brought them out from the tent and brought them to Joshua and the elders of Israel, and they placed them before the Lord.

And Joshua took Achar son of Zarah and brought him up into the valley of Achor, and his sons and his daughters and his calves and his beasts of burden and all his sheep and his tent and all his possessions, and all the people with him, and brought them up into Emekachor

And Joshua said to Achar, Why did you destroy us? May the Lord destroy you this day also. And all Israel stoned him with stones.

And they raised over him a great heap of stones, and the Lord ceased from the fury of his anger; therefore he named it Emekachor, until this day
