A prayer of Habakkuk

Lord, I have heard your report and was afraid; I understood your works and was astonished. In the midst of two living creatures you will be known; in the drawing near of the years you will be recognized; in the presence of the time you will be revealed; in the being troubled of my soul in wrath of mercy you will remember.

God will come from Theman, and the Holy One from Mount Pharan, a shady wooded mountain. Selah. His virtue covered the heavens, and the earth is full of his praise.

φέγγος αὐτοῦ ὡς φῶς ἔσται κέρατα ἐν χερσὶν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔθετο ἀγάπησιν κραταιὰν ἰσχύος αὐτοῦ

and his brightness will be as light, horns in his hands, and he set a strong love of his strength

προσώπου αὐτοῦ πορεύσεται λόγος καὶ ἐξελεύσεται ἐν πεδίλοις οἱ πόδες αὐτοῦ

Before his face a word will go forth, and his feet will go out in sandals.

καὶ ἐσαλεύθη ἡ γῆ ἐπέβλεψεν καὶ ἐτάκη ἔθνη διεθρύβη τὰ ὄρη βίᾳ ἐτάκησαν βουνοὶ αἰώνιοι

The earth stood and was shaken; nations looked and melted; the mountains were broken in pieces by force; the everlasting hills melted.

αἰωνίους αὐτοῦ ἀντὶ κόπων εἶδον σκηνώματα Αἰθιόπων πτοηθήσονται καὶ αἱ σκηναὶ γῆς Μαδιαμ

I saw the eternal ways of him; the tents of the Ethiopians will be terrified, and the tents of the land of Midian.

Was your anger against the rivers, Lord, or your wrath against the rivers, or your rushing against the sea, that you should mount upon your horses, and your riding is salvation?

ἐντενεῖς τὸ τόξον σου ἐπὶ σκῆπτρα λέγει κύριος διάψαλμα ποταμῶν ῥαγήσεται γῆ

In stretching out you will stretch your bow against the scepters, says the Lord. Selah. The earth will be broken by rivers.

σε καὶ ὠδινήσουσιν λαοί σκορπίζων ὕδατα πορείας ἔδωκεν ἡ ἄβυσσος φωνὴν αὐτῆς ὕψος φαντασίας αὐτῆς ἐπήρθη

They will see you and be in pain, peoples; scattering waters of a journey the abyss gave its voice; the height of its apparition was lifted up.

ἥλιος καὶ ἡ σελήνη ἔστη ἐν τῇ τάξει αὐτῆς εἰς φῶς βολίδες σου πορεύσονται εἰς φέγγος ἀστραπῆς ὅπλων σου

The sun and the moon stood in their order; into light your bolts will go, into the brightness of the lightning of your weapons.

ἀπειλῇ σου ὀλιγώσεις γῆν καὶ ἐν θυμῷ κατάξεις ἔθνη

By your threat you will diminish the earth, and in wrath you will bring down nations.

εἰς σωτηρίαν λαοῦ σου τοῦ σῶσαι τοὺς χριστούς σου ἔβαλες εἰς κεφαλὰς ἀνόμων θάνατον ἐξήγειρας δεσμοὺς ἕως τραχήλου διάψαλμα

You went out for the salvation of your people, to save your anointed ones; you put death upon the heads of the lawless; you raised up bonds up to the neck. Selah

ἐν ἐκστάσει κεφαλὰς δυναστῶν σεισθήσονται ἐν αὐτῇ διανοίξουσιν χαλινοὺς αὐτῶν ὡς ἔσθων πτωχὸς λάθρᾳ

You have shattered in ecstasy the heads of the rulers; they shall be shaken in it; they shall open their bridles, as a poor man eats secretly

ἐπεβίβασας εἰς θάλασσαν τοὺς ἵππους σου ταράσσοντας ὕδατα πολλά

And you mounted your horses into the sea, troubling many waters.

16

I kept watch, and my belly was alarmed by the sound of the prayer of my lips, and trembling entered into my bones, and beneath me my condition was troubled; I will rest in the day of my affliction, for me to go up to the people of my sojourning.

17

For the fig tree will not bear fruit, and there will be no produce in the vines; the work of the olive tree will fail, and the fields will not yield food. The sheep have failed from food, and there are no cattle in the stalls of reconciliation for them.

δὲ ἐν τῷ κυρίῳ ἀγαλλιάσομαι χαρήσομαι ἐπὶ τῷ θεῷ τῷ σωτῆρί μου

But I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be glad in God my Savior

The Lord my God is my strength, and he will set my feet to the end; upon the heights he causes me to mount, to prevail in his song
