My son, if you have guaranteed your friend, you have given your hand to an enemy.

Proverbs 6

Text size:
For a man’s own lips are a strong snare, and he is caught by the lips of his own mouth
Do, son, what I command you, and deliver yourself, for you have come into the hands of evils on account of your friend; go, do not faint, but also urge on your friend whom you have pledged for.
Give not sleep to your eyes, nor let your eyelids doze.
so that he may be saved like a gazelle from snares and like a bird from a trap
Go to the ant, O sluggard, and be zealous, seeing his ways, and become wiser than it.
For he, having neither field to farm nor one compelling him, nor being under a master
prepares her food in summer and gathers her provision in harvest
How long, sluggard, will you lie down? And when will you be awakened from sleep?
A little while you sleep, a little while you sit, a little while you doze, a little while you fold your arms over your chest
then poverty and want come upon you like a bad traveler, like a good runner
A foolish and lawless man walks in ways not good.
And the same one winks with the eye, and signals with the foot, and teaches with motions of the fingers.
But with a perverted heart he devises evils at every time; such a one stirs up disturbances for a city
Therefore suddenly comes his destruction, interruption and incurable crushing
For the Lord rejoices in all that he hates, and he is broken by uncleanness of soul.
haughty eyes, a false tongue, hands shedding righteous blood
and a heart devising evil thoughts, and feet hastening to do evil
A false witness kindles lies, and sends judgments between brothers.
My son, keep your father’s commands, and do not reject your mother’s ordinances.
Bind them continually upon your soul, and fasten them upon your neck.
When you walk about, bring her along, and let her be with you; and whenever you sleep, let her watch over you, so that when you wake she may converse with you.
For a commandment is a lamp and a law, and light and a way of life, reproof and discipline
to keep you from an adulterous woman and from the slander of a foreign tongue
Do not let desire for beauty conquer you, nor be caught by your eyes, nor be carried away by her eyelids.
For the price of a prostitute is as much as one loaf of bread, but a woman hunts precious souls of men.
Will anyone bind fire in his bosom, and the garments not burn?
Or will anyone walk on coals of fire and not burn his feet?
So also the one who goes in to a married woman will not go unpunished, nor anyone who touches her
It is not wondrous if one is caught stealing, for he steals in order to satisfy his hungry soul.
but if he be caught, he shall repay sevenfold, and by giving all the things that are his, he shall rescue himself
But the adulterer, through lack of understanding, acquires destruction for his soul.
He bears both pains and dishonor, but his reproach will not be blotted out forever.
For the jealousy of a man is full of wrath, and he will not spare in a day of judgment.
He will accept no ransom for enmity, nor will he be reconciled by many gifts.
