And it came to pass in the judging of the judges that there was a famine in the land, and a man went from Bethlehem of Judah to sojourn in the field of Moab, he and his wife and his sons.

And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife was Naomi, and the name of his two sons was Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites from Bethlehem of Judah; and they came into the field of Moab and were there.

And Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left and her two sons.

And they took for themselves Moabite women; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the second Ruth; and they dwelt there about ten years.

And both Mahlon and Chilion also died, and the woman was left from her husband and from her two sons

And she arose, and her two daughters-in-law, and they returned from the field of Moab, because they heard in the field of Moab that the Lord had visited his people to give them bread.

And she went out from the place where she was there, and her two daughters-in-law with her, and they were going in the way to return to the land of Judah

And Naomi said to her daughters-in-law, Go on now, return each to her mother’s house; may the Lord do mercy with you, as you did with the dead and with me.

May the Lord grant you and may you find rest, each in the house of her husband. And she kissed them, and they lifted up their voice and wept.

And they said to her, We are turning back with you to your people.

And Naomi said, Return now, my daughters, and why do you go with me? Are there still sons to me in my womb, and will they be for you as men?

Turn back now, my daughters, because I have grown old, so as not to be for a husband; for I said, Though there is for me a hope of my becoming to a husband and I should bear sons,

Do not wait for them until they grow up; or will you be restrained for them not to become to a man? No, my daughters, because it is bitter to me beyond you, because the hand of the Lord has gone out against me.

And they lifted up their voice and wept again, and Orpha kissed her mother-in-law, and she returned to her people; but Ruth followed her.

And Naomi said to Ruth, Behold, your sister-in-law has returned to her people and to her gods; return now, you also, after your sister-in-law.

But Ruth said, Do not meet me, to leave you or to turn back after you; for where you may go, I will go, and where you may lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God.

and where you die I will die, and there I will be buried; thus may the Lord do to me and thus may he add, because death shall separate between me and you

But Naomi, when she saw that she was strengthening herself to go with her, ceased speaking to her any longer

And the two of them went until their coming to Bethlehem, and all the city was sounded about them, and they said, Is this Naomi?

And she said to them, Do not indeed call me Naomi; call me Bitter, because the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.

I went out full, and the Lord has brought me back empty, and why do you call me Naomi? and the Lord has humbled me, and the Mighty One has afflicted me.

And Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, returning from the field of Moab; and they arrived at Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.
