κατὰ πρόγνωσιν θεοῦ πατρός, ἐν ἁγιασμῷ πνεύματος, εἰς ὑπακοὴν καὶ ῥαντισμὸν αἵματος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ· χάρις ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη πληθυνθείη.
According to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and the sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ; grace to you and peace be multiplied.
Εὐλογητὸς ὁ θεὸς καὶ πατὴρ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὁ κατὰ τὸ πολὺ αὐτοῦ ἔλεος ἀναγεννήσας ἡμᾶς εἰς ἐλπίδα ζῶσαν δι' ἀναστάσεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐκ νεκρῶν,
Blessed is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
to an inheritance imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you
who are guarded by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
In which you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,
ἵνα τὸ δοκίμιον ὑμῶν τῆς πίστεως πολυτιμότερον χρυσίου τοῦ ἀπολλυμένου διὰ πυρὸς δὲ δοκιμαζομένου εὑρεθῇ εἰς ἔπαινον καὶ δόξαν καὶ τιμὴν ἐν ἀποκαλύψει Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ.
so that the proof of your faith, more precious than gold that perishes though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
ὃν οὐκ ἰδόντες ἀγαπᾶτε, εἰς ὃν ἄρτι μὴ ὁρῶντες πιστεύοντες δὲ ἀγαλλιᾶσθε χαρᾷ ἀνεκλαλήτῳ καὶ δεδοξασμένῃ,
Whom you love without having seen, in whom, though now you do not see him, you believe and rejoice with an inexpressible and glorified joy,
obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Concerning which salvation the prophets who prophesied about the grace destined for you searched carefully and inquired thoroughly,
ἐραυνῶντες εἰς τίνα ἢ ποῖον καιρὸν ἐδήλου τὸ ἐν αὐτοῖς πνεῦμα Χριστοῦ προμαρτυρόμενον τὰ εἰς Χριστὸν παθήματα καὶ τὰς μετὰ ταῦτα δόξας·
searching to what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating beforehand the sufferings destined for the Messiah and the glories following them;
οἷς ἀπεκαλύφθη ὅτι οὐχ ἑαυτοῖς ὑμῖν δὲ διηκόνουν αὐτά, ἃ νῦν ἀνηγγέλη ὑμῖν διὰ τῶν εὐαγγελισαμένων ὑμᾶς πνεύματι ἁγίῳ ἀποσταλέντι ἀπ' οὐρανοῦ, εἰς ἃ ἐπιθυμοῦσιν ἄγγελοι παρακύψαι.
To whom it was revealed that they were not serving themselves but you, the things now announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, into which angels long to look closely.
Διὸ ἀναζωσάμενοι τὰς ὀσφύας τῆς διανοίας ὑμῶν, νήφοντες τελείως, ἐλπίσατε ἐπὶ τὴν φερομένην ὑμῖν χάριν ἐν ἀποκαλύψει Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ.
Therefore, having girded up the loins of your mind, being sober, hope fully for the grace that is brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former desires that were in your ignorance,
But just as the one who called you is holy, so also be holy in all your conduct,
Because it is written, You will be holy, for I am holy.
Καὶ εἰ πατέρα ἐπικαλεῖσθε τὸν ἀπροσωπολήμπτως κρίνοντα κατὰ τὸ ἑκάστου ἔργον, ἐν φόβῳ τὸν τῆς παροικίας ὑμῶν χρόνον ἀναστράφητε·
And if you call on the Father who judges impartially according to each one's work, conduct the time of your sojourning with fear.
εἰδότες ὅτι οὐ φθαρτοῖς, ἀργυρίῳ ἢ χρυσίῳ, ἐλυτρώθητε ἐκ τῆς ματαίας ὑμῶν ἀναστροφῆς πατροπαραδότου,
Knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things, silver or gold, from your futile way of life handed down from your ancestors,
but with precious blood, like that of an unblemished and spotless Lamb, the Messiah,
Having been foreknown before the foundation of the world, but revealed at the end of the ages for your sake
τοὺς δι' αὐτοῦ πιστοὺς εἰς θεὸν τὸν ἐγείραντα αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν καὶ δόξαν αὐτῷ δόντα, ὥστε τὴν πίστιν ὑμῶν καὶ ἐλπίδα εἶναι εἰς θεόν.
To those who through him are faithful to God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
Τὰς ψυχὰς ὑμῶν ἡγνικότες ἐν τῇ ὑπακοῇ τῆς ἀληθείας εἰς φιλαδελφίαν ἀνυπόκριτον ἐκ καρδίας ἀλλήλους ἀγαπήσατε ἐκτενῶς,
Having purified your souls by obedience to the truth for sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from the heart,
Having been born again not from perishable seed but from imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;
διότι πᾶσα σὰρξ ὡς χόρτος, καὶ πᾶσα δόξα αὐτῆς ὡς ἄνθος χόρτου· ἐξηράνθη ὁ χόρτος, καὶ τὸ ἄνθος ἐξέπεσεν·
For all flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower of grass; the grass withers, and the flower falls off.
But the word of the Lord remains forever. And this is the word that was proclaimed to you.
