James 5 — SBL Greek New Testament

Ἄγε νῦν οἱ πλούσιοι, κλαύσατε ὀλολύζοντες ἐπὶ ταῖς ταλαιπωρίαις ὑμῶν ταῖς ἐπερχομέναις.

Come now, you rich, weep and wail over the miseries coming upon you.

ὁ πλοῦτος ὑμῶν σέσηπεν, καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια ὑμῶν σητόβρωτα γέγονεν,

Your wealth has rotted, and your clothes have become moth-eaten,

Your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will be a witness against you and will consume your flesh like fire, which you have stored up for the last days.

Behold, the wages of the workers who have harvested your fields, which you have withheld by fraud, are crying out, and the cries of the reapers have entered into the ears of the Lord of hosts.

ἐτρυφήσατε ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ ἐσπαταλήσατε, ἐθρέψατε τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ σφαγῆς.

You have lived in luxury on the earth and have indulged yourselves; you have nourished your hearts on a day of slaughter.

κατεδικάσατε, ἐφονεύσατε τὸν δίκαιον. οὐκ ἀντιτάσσεται ὑμῖν;

You have condemned and murdered the righteous one. Does he not resist you?

Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the presence of the Lord. Behold, the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, patiently enduring it until he receives the early and the late crop.

μακροθυμήσατε καὶ ὑμεῖς, στηρίξατε τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν, ὅτι ἡ παρουσία τοῦ κυρίου ἤγγικεν.

Be patient also, strengthen your hearts, because the presence of the Lord has come near.

μὴ στενάζετε, ἀδελφοί, κατ' ἀλλήλων, ἵνα μὴ κριθῆτε· ἰδοὺ ὁ κριτὴς πρὸ τῶν θυρῶν ἕστηκεν.

Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged. Behold, the Judge is standing at the doors.

ὑπόδειγμα λάβετε, ἀδελφοί, τῆς κακοπαθίας καὶ τῆς μακροθυμίας τοὺς προφήτας, οἳ ἐλάλησαν ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι κυρίου.

Brothers, take as an example of suffering and patience the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

Behold, we bless those who endure; you have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord, that the Lord is full of compassion and merciful.

Above all, my brothers, do not swear, neither by heaven nor by earth nor by any other oath; but let your Yes be Yes and your No be No, so that you do not fall under judgment.

Κακοπαθεῖ τις ἐν ὑμῖν; προσευχέσθω· εὐθυμεῖ τις; ψαλλέτω.

Is anyone suffering among you? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praises.

14

Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

καὶ ἡ εὐχὴ τῆς πίστεως σώσει τὸν κάμνοντα, καὶ ἐγερεῖ αὐτὸν ὁ κύριος· κἂν ἁμαρτίας ᾖ πεποιηκώς, ἀφεθήσεται αὐτῷ.

And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.

ἐξομολογεῖσθε οὖν ἀλλήλοις τὰς ἁμαρτίας καὶ εὔχεσθε ὑπὲρ ἀλλήλων, ὅπως ἰαθῆτε. πολὺ ἰσχύει δέησις δικαίου ἐνεργουμένη.

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful and effective.

Elijah was a person with feelings like ours, and he prayed that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months.

18

καὶ πάλιν προσηύξατο, καὶ ὁ οὐρανὸς ὑετὸν ἔδωκεν καὶ ἡ γῆ ἐβλάστησεν τὸν καρπὸν αὐτῆς.

And again he prayed, and the sky gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.

Ἀδελφοί μου, ἐάν τις ἐν ὑμῖν πλανηθῇ ἀπὸ τῆς ἀληθείας καὶ ἐπιστρέψῃ τις αὐτόν,

My brothers, if anyone among you wanders away from the truth and someone turns him back,

20

γινωσκέτω ὅτι ὁ ἐπιστρέψας ἁμαρτωλὸν ἐκ πλάνης ὁδοῦ αὐτοῦ σώσει ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἐκ θανάτου καὶ καλύψει πλῆθος ἁμαρτιῶν.

Know that the one who turns a sinner from the error of their way will save their soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.
