For you yourselves know precisely that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night.
ὅταν λέγωσιν· Εἰρήνη καὶ ἀσφάλεια, τότε αἰφνίδιος αὐτοῖς ἐφίσταται ὄλεθρος ὥσπερ ἡ ὠδὶν τῇ ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσῃ, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐκφύγωσιν.
When they say, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction comes upon them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
But you, brothers, are not in darkness, so that the day would surprise you like a thief,
For all of you are children of light and children of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness.
Therefore, let us not sleep as the others do, but let us be awake and sober.
For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.
ἡμεῖς δὲ ἡμέρας ὄντες νήφωμεν, ἐνδυσάμενοι θώρακα πίστεως καὶ ἀγάπης καὶ περικεφαλαίαν ἐλπίδα σωτηρίας·
But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and the helmet of the hope of salvation.
ὅτι οὐκ ἔθετο ἡμᾶς ὁ θεὸς εἰς ὀργὴν ἀλλὰ εἰς περιποίησιν σωτηρίας διὰ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ,
For God did not appoint us to wrath but to the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
He who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live together with him.
Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you are doing.
Ἐρωτῶμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, εἰδέναι τοὺς κοπιῶντας ἐν ὑμῖν καὶ προϊσταμένους ὑμῶν ἐν κυρίῳ καὶ νουθετοῦντας ὑμᾶς,
But we ask you, brothers, to acknowledge those who labor among you and lead you in the Lord and admonish you,
And regard them very highly in love because of their work. Live in peace among yourselves.
παρακαλοῦμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, νουθετεῖτε τοὺς ἀτάκτους, παραμυθεῖσθε τοὺς ὀλιγοψύχους, ἀντέχεσθε τῶν ἀσθενῶν, μακροθυμεῖτε πρὸς πάντας.
But we urge you, brothers, admonish the disorderly, encourage the fainthearted, support the weak, be patient with all.
ὁρᾶτε μή τις κακὸν ἀντὶ κακοῦ τινι ἀποδῷ, ἀλλὰ πάντοτε τὸ ἀγαθὸν διώκετε εἰς ἀλλήλους καὶ εἰς πάντας.
See that no one repays evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good for one another and for all.
Always rejoice,
Pray without ceasing,
Give thanks in everything; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Do not quench the Spirit,
Do not despise prophecies.
But test everything; hold fast to what is good,
Abstain from every kind of evil.
Αὐτὸς δὲ ὁ θεὸς τῆς εἰρήνης ἁγιάσαι ὑμᾶς ὁλοτελεῖς, καὶ ὁλόκληρον ὑμῶν τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ καὶ τὸ σῶμα ἀμέμπτως ἐν τῇ παρουσίᾳ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τηρηθείη.
Now may the God of peace sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Faithful is the one calling you, who will also do it.
Brothers, pray for us.
Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.
I solemnly charge you by the Lord to have the letter read to all the brothers.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
