Therefore, brothers, we ask and encourage you in the Lord Jesus to walk and please God just as you received from us how you ought to walk and please him, so that you may abound even more.

οἴδατε γὰρ τίνας παραγγελίας ἐδώκαμεν ὑμῖν διὰ τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ.

For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.

τοῦτο γάρ ἐστιν θέλημα τοῦ θεοῦ, ὁ ἁγιασμὸς ὑμῶν, ἀπέχεσθαι ὑμᾶς ἀπὸ τῆς πορνείας,

For this is the will of God, your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality,

εἰδέναι ἕκαστον ὑμῶν τὸ ἑαυτοῦ σκεῦος κτᾶσθαι ἐν ἁγιασμῷ καὶ τιμῇ,

to know how each of you should possess his own vessel in holiness and honor,

μὴ ἐν πάθει ἐπιθυμίας καθάπερ καὶ τὰ ἔθνη τὰ μὴ εἰδότα τὸν θεόν,

not in passionate desire like the Gentiles who do not know God,

not to transgress and to take advantage of his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger concerning all these things, just as we also told you beforehand and solemnly warned you.

οὐ γὰρ ἐκάλεσεν ἡμᾶς ὁ θεὸς ἐπὶ ἀκαθαρσίᾳ ἀλλ' ἐν ἁγιασμῷ.

For God did not call us to impurity but to holiness.

τοιγαροῦν ὁ ἀθετῶν οὐκ ἄνθρωπον ἀθετεῖ ἀλλὰ τὸν θεὸν τὸν καὶ διδόντα τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτοῦ τὸ ἅγιον εἰς ὑμᾶς.

Therefore the one who rejects does not reject a human but God, who also gives to you his Holy Spirit.

Περὶ δὲ τῆς φιλαδελφίας οὐ χρείαν ἔχετε γράφειν ὑμῖν, αὐτοὶ γὰρ ὑμεῖς θεοδίδακτοί ἐστε εἰς τὸ ἀγαπᾶν ἀλλήλους·

Concerning brotherly love, you do not need anyone to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another.

καὶ γὰρ ποιεῖτε αὐτὸ εἰς πάντας τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς τοὺς ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ Μακεδονίᾳ. παρακαλοῦμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, περισσεύειν μᾶλλον,

For you are doing it for all the brothers throughout all Macedonia. And we urge you, brothers, to excel even more,

καὶ φιλοτιμεῖσθαι ἡσυχάζειν καὶ πράσσειν τὰ ἴδια καὶ ἐργάζεσθαι ταῖς χερσὶν ὑμῶν, καθὼς ὑμῖν παρηγγείλαμεν,

and to aspire to live quietly, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your own hands, just as we commanded you,

ἵνα περιπατῆτε εὐσχημόνως πρὸς τοὺς ἔξω καὶ μηδενὸς χρείαν ἔχητε.

so that you may walk properly toward those outside and have no need of anyone.

But we do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve as the rest who have no hope.

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, so also God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep through Jesus.

For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who remain until the presence of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.

For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a command, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first,

Then we who are alive, who remain, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.

ὥστε παρακαλεῖτε ἀλλήλους ἐν τοῖς λόγοις τούτοις.

Therefore encourage one another with these words.
