When they heard that he was addressing them in the Hebrew dialect, they became even quieter. And he said,
Ἐγώ εἰμι ἀνὴρ Ἰουδαῖος, γεγεννημένος ἐν Ταρσῷ τῆς Κιλικίας, ἀνατεθραμμένος δὲ ἐν τῇ πόλει ταύτῃ παρὰ τοὺς πόδας Γαμαλιήλ, πεπαιδευμένος κατὰ ἀκρίβειαν τοῦ πατρῴου νόμου, ζηλωτὴς ὑπάρχων τοῦ θεοῦ καθὼς πάντες ὑμεῖς ἐστε σήμερον,
I am a man, a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, thoroughly educated according to the strictness of the ancestral law, being zealous for God just as you all are today,
who persecuted this way to death, binding both men and women and delivering them into prisons,
ὡς καὶ ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς μαρτυρεῖ μοι καὶ πᾶν τὸ πρεσβυτέριον· παρ' ὧν καὶ ἐπιστολὰς δεξάμενος πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς εἰς Δαμασκὸν ἐπορευόμην ἄξων καὶ τοὺς ἐκεῖσε ὄντας δεδεμένους εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἵνα τιμωρηθῶσιν.
As the high priest also testifies to me, and all the elders, from whom having received letters to the brothers, I was going to Damascus, bringing also those who were there bound, to Jerusalem to be punished.
Ἐγένετο δέ μοι πορευομένῳ καὶ ἐγγίζοντι τῇ Δαμασκῷ περὶ μεσημβρίαν ἐξαίφνης ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ περιαστράψαι φῶς ἱκανὸν περὶ ἐμέ,
Now it happened as I was going and approaching Damascus around noon, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around me, bright enough,
I fell to the ground and I heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?
But I answered, Who are you, Lord? And he said to me, I am Jesus the Nazarene whom you are persecuting.
But those who were with me saw the light, but they did not hear the voice of the one speaking to me.
εἶπον δέ· Τί ποιήσω, κύριε; ὁ δὲ κύριος εἶπεν πρός με· Ἀναστὰς πορεύου εἰς Δαμασκόν, κἀκεῖ σοι λαληθήσεται περὶ πάντων ὧν τέτακταί σοι ποιῆσαι.
I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said to me, Get up and go to Damascus, and there you will be told about all the things appointed for you to do.
ὡς δὲ οὐκ ἐνέβλεπον ἀπὸ τῆς δόξης τοῦ φωτὸς ἐκείνου, χειραγωγούμενος ὑπὸ τῶν συνόντων μοι ἦλθον εἰς Δαμασκόν.
But when I could not see because of the brightness of that light, being led by the hands of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.
But a certain man named Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well spoken of by all the Jews living there,
Coming to me and standing, he said to me, Saul, brother, look up; and at that hour I looked up at him.
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν· Ὁ θεὸς τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν προεχειρίσατό σε γνῶναι τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἰδεῖν τὸν δίκαιον καὶ ἀκοῦσαι φωνὴν ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ,
But he said, The God of our fathers appointed you to know his will and to see the righteous one and to hear a voice from his mouth,
because you will be a witness to him before all people of what you have seen and heard.
And now, why do you delay? Get up, be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on his name.
It happened to me, as I was returning to Jerusalem and praying in the temple, that I fell into a trance.
καὶ ἰδεῖν αὐτὸν λέγοντά μοι· Σπεῦσον καὶ ἔξελθε ἐν τάχει ἐξ Ἰερουσαλήμ, διότι οὐ παραδέξονταί σου μαρτυρίαν περὶ ἐμοῦ.
and to see him saying to me, Hurry and go out quickly from Jerusalem, because they will not accept your testimony about me.
κἀγὼ εἶπον· Κύριε, αὐτοὶ ἐπίστανται ὅτι ἐγὼ ἤμην φυλακίζων καὶ δέρων κατὰ τὰς συναγωγὰς τοὺς πιστεύοντας ἐπὶ σέ·
And I said, Lord, they know that I was imprisoning and beating in the synagogues those who believe in you.
καὶ ὅτε ἐξεχύννετο τὸ αἷμα Στεφάνου τοῦ μάρτυρός σου, καὶ αὐτὸς ἤμην ἐφεστὼς καὶ συνευδοκῶν καὶ φυλάσσων τὰ ἱμάτια τῶν ἀναιρούντων αὐτόν.
And when the blood of Stephen your witness was being shed, I was standing by and approving and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.
And he said to me, Go, for I am sending you far away to the Gentiles.
Ἤκουον δὲ αὐτοῦ ἄχρι τούτου τοῦ λόγου καὶ ἐπῆραν τὴν φωνὴν αὐτῶν λέγοντες· Αἶρε ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς τὸν τοιοῦτον, οὐ γὰρ καθῆκεν αὐτὸν ζῆν.
They were listening to him up to this word, and they raised their voices, saying, Remove such a man from the earth, for it is not fitting for him to live.
While they were shouting and throwing off their clothes and throwing dust into the air,
ἐκέλευσεν ὁ χιλίαρχος εἰσάγεσθαι αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν, εἴπας μάστιξιν ἀνετάζεσθαι αὐτὸν ἵνα ἐπιγνῷ δι' ἣν αἰτίαν οὕτως ἐπεφώνουν αὐτῷ.
The tribune ordered that he be brought into the barracks, saying that he should be flogged in order to find out for what reason they were shouting against him like this.
ὡς δὲ προέτειναν αὐτὸν τοῖς ἱμᾶσιν εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν ἑστῶτα ἑκατόνταρχον ὁ Παῦλος· Εἰ ἄνθρωπον Ῥωμαῖον καὶ ἀκατάκριτον ἔξεστιν ὑμῖν μαστίζειν;
But when they were about to stretch him out with the ropes, Paul said to the centurion standing by, Is it lawful for you to flog a Roman citizen who is uncondemned?
ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ ἑκατοντάρχης προσελθὼν τῷ χιλιάρχῳ ἀπήγγειλεν λέγων· Τί μέλλεις ποιεῖν; ὁ γὰρ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος Ῥωμαῖός ἐστιν.
But when the centurion heard, he went to the commander and reported, saying, What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman.
Then the centurion came near and said to him, Are you a Roman? He said, Yes.
ἀπεκρίθη δὲ ὁ χιλίαρχος· Ἐγὼ πολλοῦ κεφαλαίου τὴν πολιτείαν ταύτην ἐκτησάμην. ὁ δὲ Παῦλος ἔφη· Ἐγὼ δὲ καὶ γεγέννημαι.
The commander answered, I acquired this citizenship with a large sum of money. But Paul said, I was born a citizen.
εὐθέως οὖν ἀπέστησαν ἀπ' αὐτοῦ οἱ μέλλοντες αὐτὸν ἀνετάζειν· καὶ ὁ χιλίαρχος δὲ ἐφοβήθη ἐπιγνοὺς ὅτι Ῥωμαῖός ἐστιν καὶ ὅτι αὐτὸν ἦν δεδεκώς.
Immediately then those who were about to interrogate him stepped back; and the tribune became afraid when he recognized that he was a Roman and that he had bound him.
Τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον βουλόμενος γνῶναι τὸ ἀσφαλὲς τὸ τί κατηγορεῖται ὑπὸ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἔλυσεν αὐτόν, καὶ ἐκέλευσεν συνελθεῖν τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ πᾶν τὸ συνέδριον, καὶ καταγαγὼν τὸν Παῦλον ἔστησεν εἰς αὐτούς.
But on the next day, wanting to find out clearly what he was accused of by the Jews, he released him and ordered the chief priests and the whole council to assemble, and having brought Paul, he stood him before them.
