Before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

And during the supper, the devil had already put into the heart of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray him,

Knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God,

He rises from the meal and puts aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, he girds himself.

Then he put water into the basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded.

He then comes to Simon Peter. He says to him, Lord, are you washing my feet?

Jesus answered and said to him, What I am doing you do not know now, but you will know afterward.

Peter said to him, You will never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I do not wash you, you have no part with me.

Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not only my feet but also my hands and my head.

Jesus said to him, The one who has bathed does not need to wash except for the feet, but is entirely clean; and you are clean, but not all.

For he knew the one who was betraying him; therefore he said, Not all of you are clean.

So when he had washed their feet and taken his garments and reclined again, he said to them, Do you understand what I have done to you?

You call me Teacher and Lord, and rightly so, for I am.

If then I, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.

For I have given you an example so that just as I did to you, you also do.

Truly, truly I say to you, a servant is not greater than his lord, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.

If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.

I do not say this about all of you; I know whom I have chosen; but so that the Scripture may be fulfilled: The one who eats my bread has lifted up his heel against me.

From now on I am telling you before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I am.

Truly, truly I say to you, the one who receives anyone I send receives me, and the one who receives me receives the one who sent me.

After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, and said, Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.

The disciples looked at one another, wondering about whom he was speaking.

One of his disciples was reclining in Jesus’ bosom, the one whom Jesus loved.

Therefore Simon Peter gestures to him to ask who it is about whom he is speaking.

Leaning thus on Jesus’ chest, he said to him, Lord, who is it?

Jesus answered, He is the one to whom I will dip the morsel and give it. So, having dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot.

And after the morsel, Satan then entered into him. Jesus therefore said to him, What you are about to do, do quickly.

But no one of those reclining knew why he said this to him.

For some thought, since Judas had the money bag, that Jesus was telling him, Buy what we need for the festival, or to give something to the poor.

So having taken the morsel, he immediately went out. And it was night.

So when he had gone out, Jesus said, Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.

If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and will glorify him immediately.

Little children, I am with you for a little while longer. You will seek me, and just as I told the Jews, that where I am going you cannot come, I now say to you.

I give you a new commandment that you love one another, just as I have loved you, so that you also love one another.

By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where are you going? Jesus answered, Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later.

Simon Peter said to him, Lord, why am I not able to follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.

Jesus answered, Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly I say to you, the rooster will not crow until you deny me three times.
