In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus to register the entire inhabited world.

This registration was the first made while Quirinius was governor of Syria.

And all were going to be registered, each one to his own city.

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was from the house and lineage of David,

to be registered together with Mary, to whom he was engaged, who was pregnant.

And it happened while they were there that the days for her giving birth were completed,

And she gave birth to her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

And shepherds were in the same region, keeping watch over their flock by night.

And an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid.

And the angel said to them, Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people,

For today a savior has been born to you, who is the Messiah, the Lord, in the city of David.

And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army praising God and saying,

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among people of goodwill.

And it happened, as the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds were speaking to one another, Let us go then to Bethlehem and see this word that has happened, which the Lord made known to us.

And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger.

And when they saw, they made known concerning the word spoken to them about this child.

And all who heard were amazed at what the shepherds told them.

But Mary kept all these words, reflecting on them in her heart.

And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them.

And when the eight days were completed for circumcising him, his name was called Jesus, the one named by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

And when the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord,

as it is written in the law of the Lord, every male opening the womb shall be called holy to the Lord,

and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.

And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he saw the Messiah of the Lord.

And he came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents were bringing in the child Jesus to do for him according to the custom of the law,

And he took him into his arms and blessed God and said,

Now you dismiss your servant, master, according to your word in peace.

because my eyes have seen your salvation

which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,

a light for revelation to the nations and glory of your people Israel.

And his father and his mother were marveling at what was being said about him.

And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, Behold, this one is set for the falling and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed,

And a sword will pierce through your own soul also, so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

And there was Anna the prophetess, daughter of Phanuel, from the tribe of Asher. She had lived many days, having been with a husband seven years from her virginity,

and she was a widow until eighty-four years old, who did not depart from the temple, serving with fasting and prayers night and day.

And at that hour she stood up, gave thanks to God, and spoke about him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

And when they had completed everything according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth.

The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.

And his parents went up every year to Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover.

And when he became twelve years old, as they went up according to the custom of the festival

And when the days were completed, as they were returning, the boy Jesus remained in Jerusalem, and his parents did not know it.

But thinking that he was in the group, they traveled for a day and searched for him among relatives and acquaintances,

And not having found him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him.

And it happened after three days they found him in the temple sitting among the teachers and listening to them and asking them questions.

And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.

And when they saw him, they were amazed, and his mother said to him, Child, why have you done this to us? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in pain.

And he said to them, Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in the things of my Father?

And they did not understand the word that he spoke to them.

And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. And his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

And Jesus was advancing in wisdom and in age and in favor with God and with people.
