In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, Philip his brother was tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene,

During the high priests Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zechariah, in the wilderness.

And he came into all the surrounding region of the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,

As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: A voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.

Every valley will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be made low, and the crooked will become straight, and the rough places smooth roads.

And all flesh will see the salvation of God.

He was saying to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

Produce therefore fruits worthy of repentance; and do not begin to say to yourselves, We have Abraham as our father, for I tell you that God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham.

Now the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

And the crowds were asking him, What then shall we do?

And answering, he said to them, Whoever has two tunics must share with the one who has none, and whoever has food must do the same.

Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, Teacher, what shall we do?

But he said to them, Do not demand more than what has been appointed to you.

And soldiers also asked him, What shall we do? And he said to them, Do not extort anyone, do not falsely accuse anyone, and be content with your wages.

Now while the people were expecting and all were reasoning in their hearts about John, whether perhaps he was the Christ,

John answered all, saying, I baptize you with water; but one who is mightier than I is coming, of whom I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.

Therefore, he was exhorting many other things and was proclaiming the good news to the people.

But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him concerning Herodias, the wife of his brother, and concerning all the evil things Herod had done,

He added this to all and shut John up in prison.

Now it happened, when all the people were baptized and Jesus was baptized and was praying, that the heaven was opened.

and the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven: You are my beloved Son; in you I am well pleased.

And Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began, being son, as was supposed, of Joseph the son of Eli.
