The Koine Bible

Now all the tax collectors and sinners were approaching him to listen.

And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling, saying, This one welcomes sinners and eats with them.

And he told them this parable, saying,

What man among you having one hundred sheep and losing one of them does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the lost one until he finds it?

And having found it, he puts it on his shoulders rejoicing,

And having come into the house, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.

I tell you that in this way there will be joy in heaven over one sinner who repents more than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.

Or what woman having ten drachmas, if she loses one drachma, does she not light a lamp and sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?

And having found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me because I have found the drachma that I lost.

In the same way, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.

He said, A certain man had two sons.

And the younger of them said to the father, Father, give me the portion of the property that is about to come; and he divided to them the living.

And after a few days, the younger son gathered all together and departed to a distant country, and there he scattered his wealth living wastefully.

And after he had spent everything, a severe famine occurred in that country, and he began to be in need.

And having gone, he joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs.

And he was longing to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, and no one was giving him anything.

But when he came to himself, he said, How many hired workers of my father have bread in abundance, and I am perishing here from hunger?

I will get up and go to my father and say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you,

I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me as one of your hired servants.

And rising, he came to his father. While he was still far off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion, and running, he fell on his neck and kissed him.

But the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.

But the father said to his servants, Quickly bring the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet,

And bring the fattened calf, kill it, and having eaten, let us celebrate with joy,

For this son of mine was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found. And they began to celebrate.

Now the older son of his was in the field, and as he came near the house, he heard music and dancing,

And calling one of the servants, he inquired what these things might be.

But he said to him, Your brother has come, and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has received him healthy.

But he became angry and was unwilling to enter. And his father went out and pleaded with him.

But he answered his father, I have served you for so many years, and never did I disobey your command, and you never gave me a young goat so that I might celebrate with my friends.

But when your son, this one who devoured your life with prostitutes, came, you slaughtered for him the fattened calf.

But he said to him, Child, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.

But it was necessary to rejoice and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life, and was lost and has been found.
