And it happened that he entered the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees on a Sabbath to eat bread, and they were watching him closely.

And behold, there was a certain man suffering from dropsy in front of him.

And Jesus answered and said to the lawyers and Pharisees, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?

But they became silent. And taking hold of him, he healed him and sent him away.

And he said to them, Whose son or ox will fall into a well, and will he not immediately pull it out on the day of the Sabbath?

And they were not able to answer back to these things.

He was telling a parable to those who were invited, noticing how they chose the places of honor, saying to them,

When you are invited by someone to a wedding, do not sit in the place of honor, in case someone more honorable than you has been invited by him.

And someone who invited you will come and say to you, Give this person a place, and then you will begin to hold the last place with shame.

But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when the one who invited you comes, he may say to you, Friend, move up higher. Then you will have glory in the presence of all those reclining with you.

For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.

And he also said to the one who had invited him, When you make a lunch or a dinner, do not call your friends nor your brothers nor your relatives nor rich neighbors, so that they may not also invite you back and there be a repayment to you.

But when you make a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind.

And you will be blessed, because they have no way to repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.

Now when one of those reclining with him heard this, he said to him, Blessed is the one who will eat bread in the kingdom of God.

But he said to him, A certain man prepared a great dinner and invited many.

And he sent his servant at the hour of the dinner to say to those invited, Come, for it is already ready.

And they all began to excuse themselves one by one. The first said to him, I bought a field and I need to go out and see it; I ask you, have me excused.

And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen and am going to test them; I ask you, have me excused.

And another said, I have married a wife, and for this reason I am not able to come.

And the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master, being angry, said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the city, and bring in here the poor and crippled and blind and lame.

And the servant said, Lord, what you commanded has happened, and there is still room.

And the master said to the servant, Go out into the streets and lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house may be filled.

For I tell you that none of those men who were invited will taste my dinner.

Large crowds were following him, and turning, he said to them,

If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

Whoever does not carry their own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.

For which one of you, wanting to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?

so that when he has laid a foundation but is not able to finish, all who see begin to mock him

saying that this man began to build and was not able to finish.

Or what king, going out to meet another king in war, will not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet the one coming against him with twenty thousand?

But if not, while he is still far off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.

So then, none of you who does not renounce all that he has can be my disciple.

Salt is good; but if even salt becomes tasteless, with what will it be seasoned?

It is neither fit for the soil nor for the manure pile; they throw it outside. Let the one who has ears to hear, hear.
