But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared.

But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
But when they entered, they did not find the body.
And it happened, as they were perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining clothing.
ἐμφόβων δὲ γενομένων αὐτῶν καὶ κλινουσῶν τὰ πρόσωπα εἰς τὴν γῆν εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτάς· Τί ζητεῖτε τὸν ζῶντα μετὰ τῶν νεκρῶν;
But when they became afraid and bowed their faces to the ground, they said to them, Why do you seek the living one among the dead?
He is not here, but he has been raised. Remember how he spoke to you while he was still in Galilee,
saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise again.
And they remembered his words,
And having returned from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.
Now Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them were saying these things to the apostles.
And these words appeared to them as nonsense, and they did not believe them.
But Peter, having risen, ran to the tomb; and bending down, he saw only the linen cloths; and he went away to himself, marveling at what had happened.
And behold, on that same day, two of them were going to a village sixty stadia away from Jerusalem, whose name was Emmaus,
And they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened.
And it happened, while they were talking and discussing, that Jesus himself approached and went along with them,
But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.
And he said to them, What are these words that you are exchanging with one another while walking? And they stood still, looking downcast.
ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ εἷς ὀνόματι Κλεοπᾶς εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν· Σὺ μόνος παροικεῖς Ἰερουσαλὴμ καὶ οὐκ ἔγνως τὰ γενόμενα ἐν αὐτῇ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ταύταις;
And one named Cleopas answered him, Are you the only one living in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?
And he said to them, What things? And they said to him, The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who became a man, a prophet powerful in deed and word before God and all the people,
just as the chief priests and our rulers handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him.
But we were hoping that he is the one about to redeem Israel; yet besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.
But also some women from among us amazed us, having come early to the tomb
and not finding his body, they came saying that they had seen a vision of angels who say that he is alive.
And some of those with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see him.
And he said to them, O foolish ones and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken.
Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into his glory?
And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
And they approached the village to which they were going, and he acted as if he were going farther.
And they urged him strongly, saying, Stay with us, because it is toward evening and the day has already declined. And he went in to stay with them.
And it happened, as he reclined with them, he took the bread, blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to them.
Their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from them.
καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς ἀλλήλους· Οὐχὶ ἡ καρδία ἡμῶν καιομένη ἦν ἐν ἡμῖν ὡς ἐλάλει ἡμῖν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ, ὡς διήνοιγεν ἡμῖν τὰς γραφάς;
And they said to one another, Was not our heart burning within us while he was speaking to us on the road, as he opened to us the Scriptures?
And rising at that hour, they returned to Jerusalem, and they found the eleven gathered together with those who were with them,
saying that the Lord has truly risen and has appeared to Simon.
And they were explaining what had happened on the road and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
While they were saying these things, he stood in their midst.
But being startled and frightened, they thought they were seeing a spirit.
And he said to them, Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your heart?
See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see me having.
And having said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
While they were still disbelieving from joy and marveling, he said to them, Have you anything to eat here?
But they gave him a piece of roasted fish.
And taking it in front of them, he ate.
He said to them, These are my words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things written in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms concerning me must be fulfilled.
Then he opened their mind to understand the Scriptures,
And he said to them that thus it is written, that the Christ must suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem;
You are witnesses of these things.
And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you; but you stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.
And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them.
And it happened, while he was blessing them, he separated from them and was carried up into heaven.
And they, having worshiped him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
And they were continually in the temple blessing God.
