As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: Behold, I am sending my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way.
A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths,
John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
And all the Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.
And John was clothed with camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.
And he was preaching, saying, The one stronger than me is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.
I baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.
And it happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized into the Jordan by John.
And immediately coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens being torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove upon him.
And a voice came from the heavens: You are my beloved Son; in you I have delighted.
And immediately the Spirit drove him into the wilderness.
And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan, and he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.
And after John was delivered up, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God.
And saying, The time has been fulfilled and the kingdom of God has come near; repent and believe in the gospel.
And passing by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
And Jesus said to them, Come after me, and I will make you become fishers of men.
And immediately, leaving the nets, they followed him.
And going on a little, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, and them mending the nets in the boat,
And immediately he called them. And leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, they went after him.
And they entered into Capernaum. And immediately on the Sabbaths he was teaching in the synagogue.
And they were amazed at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one having authority and not as the scribes.
And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out
Saying, What have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.
And Jesus rebuked it, saying, Be silent and come out of him.
And the unclean spirit convulsed him, and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him.
And all were amazed, so that they debated among themselves, saying, What is this? A new teaching! With authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.
And his fame immediately went out everywhere into the whole surrounding region of Galilee.
And immediately, after leaving the synagogue, they came to the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
But Simon’s mother-in-law was lying down with a fever, and immediately they told him about her.
And having come near, he raised her up, holding her hand; and the fever left her, and she served them.
When evening came, after the sun had set, they brought to him all who were sick and those possessed by demons.
And the whole city was gathered together at the door.
And he healed many who were suffering from various diseases, and cast out many demons, and he did not allow the demons to speak, because they knew him.
And very early in the morning, rising up, he went out and went to a deserted place, and there he prayed.
And Simon and those with him pursued him,
And they found him and said to him, Everyone is looking for you.
And he said to them, Let us go elsewhere to the surrounding villages, so that I may also preach there, for this is why I came out.
And he went preaching in their synagogues throughout all Galilee and casting out demons.
And a leper came to him, begging him and kneeling, saying to him, If you are willing, you can make me clean.
And being indignant, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, I want you to be made clean.
And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was cleansed.
And having sternly charged him, he immediately sent him away,
And he said to him, See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded as a testimony to them.
But he went out and began to proclaim many things and to spread the word, so that he could no longer openly enter a city, but was outside in deserted places; and people were coming to him from everywhere.
