And he went out from there and came into his hometown, and his disciples followed him.

And when the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue. And many who heard were amazed, saying, Where did this man get these things, and what is the wisdom given to him, and such powers working through his hands?

Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us? And they were scandalized at him.

And Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and among his relatives and in his own house.

And he was not able to do any power there, except that he laid hands on a few sick people and healed them.

And he marveled at their unbelief. And he went around the villages in a circle, teaching.

And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and he gave them authority over the unclean spirits,

And he commanded them to take nothing for the journey except a staff only—no bread, no bag, no money in the belt,

But wear sandals and do not put on two tunics.

And he said to them, Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave from there.

And whoever does not receive you and does not listen to you, as you go out from there, shake off the dust from under your feet as a testimony against them.

And going out, they proclaimed that they should repent,

And they cast out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.

And King Herod heard, for his name had become well known, and people were saying that John the baptizer had been raised from the dead, and because of this the powers were working in him.

But others were saying that he is Elijah; and others were saying that he is a prophet, like one of the prophets.

But when Herod heard, he said, The one I beheaded, John, has been raised.

For Herod himself, having sent, arrested John and bound him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of Philip his brother, for he had married her.

For John was saying to Herod, It is not lawful for you to have the wife of your brother.

But Herodias held a grudge against him and wanted to kill him, and she was not able.

For Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, yet he listened to him gladly.

And when the appointed day came, Herod made a banquet for his nobles and his military commanders and the leading men of Galilee,

And when Herodias’ daughter entered and danced and pleased Herod and those reclining with him, the king said to the girl, Ask me for whatever you want, and I will give it to you.

And he swore to her, Whatever you ask of me I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.

And she went out and said to her mother, What shall I ask for? And she said, The head of John the baptizer.

And immediately entering with haste to the king, she asked, saying, I want you to give me on a platter the head of John the Baptist.

And the king, becoming very distressed because of the oaths and those reclining with him, did not want to break it.

And immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded him to bring his head. And he went and beheaded him in the prison.

And he brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.

And when his disciples heard, they came and took up his corpse and laid it in a tomb.

And the apostles gathered together to Jesus, and reported to him all that they had done and all that they had taught.

And he said to them, Come yourselves apart to a deserted place and rest a little, for there were many coming and going, and they did not even have opportunity to eat.

And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves.

And they saw them going and many recognized them, and on foot from all the towns they gathered there and went ahead of them.

And going out, he saw a large crowd, and he was moved with compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.

And when the hour had become late, his disciples came to him and said, The place is deserted, and the hour is already late.

Send them away so that, having gone into the surrounding countryside and villages, they may buy for themselves something to eat.

But he answered them, You give them something to eat. And they said to him, Should we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?

But he said to them, How many loaves do you have? Go and see. And having found out, they said, Five, and two fish.

And he commanded them all to recline in groups on the green grass.

And they sat down in groups of hundreds and groups of fifties.

And taking the five loaves and the two fish, looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke the loaves and gave them to his disciples to set before them, and he divided the two fish among all.

And they all ate and were satisfied.

And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and also from the fish.

And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.

And immediately he compelled his disciples to get into the boat and go ahead to the other side toward Bethsaida, until he dismissed the crowd.

And having dismissed them, he went up to the mountain to pray.

And when evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he was alone on the land.

And seeing them struggling while rowing, for the wind was against them, about the fourth watch of the night he came to them walking on the sea, and he intended to pass by them.

But those who saw him walking on the sea thought that it was a ghost and cried out,

For all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke with them and said to them, Take courage, I am; do not be afraid.

And he went up to them into the boat, and the wind ceased. And they were greatly amazed within themselves.

For they did not understand about the loaves, but their heart was hardened.

And having crossed over to the land, they came to Gennesaret and anchored.

And when they had come out of the boat, they immediately recognized him.

They ran throughout that whole region and began to carry the sick on beds wherever they heard he was.

And wherever he entered into villages or cities or countryside, in the marketplaces they placed the sick, and they begged him that they might even touch the fringe of his garment; and all who touched him were saved.
