And it happened when Jesus finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went from there to teach and proclaim in their cities.

Now when John heard in the prison about the works of the Messiah, he sent through his disciples

He said to him, Are you the one coming, or should we expect another?

And Jesus answered them, Go and report to John what you hear and see.

The blind receive sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised, and the poor have good news preached to them.

And blessed is the one who does not stumble because of me.

Now when these men had gone away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? Look, those who wear soft clothes are in the houses of kings.

But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

This is the one about whom it is written: Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.

Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he.

From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of the heavens has been subjected to violence, and violent men seize it.

For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

And if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is about to come.

Let the one who has ears listen.

To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces who call out to others

They say, We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we mourned, and you did not lament.

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a demon.

The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners. Yet wisdom is justified by her works.

Then he began to reproach the cities in which most of his powers had been done, because they did not repent.

Woe to you, Chorazin; woe to you, Bethsaida; because if the powers that happened in you had happened in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes.

But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.

And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to Hades. For if the powers that occurred in you had occurred in Sodom, it would have remained until today.

But I say to you that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.

At that time Jesus answered and said, I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to infants.

Yes, Father, for so it pleased you before me.

All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, nor does anyone know the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

Come to me, all who are laboring and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

For my yoke is good, and my burden is light.
