On that day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea.

And large crowds gathered around him, so that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood on the shore.

And he spoke to them many things in parables, saying: Behold, the sower went out to sow.

And as he was sowing, some fell beside the road, and the birds came and devoured them.

But others fell on the rocky places where there was not much soil, and immediately they sprang up because they had no depth of soil,

But when the sun rose, it was scorched, and because it had no root, it withered.

But others fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.

But others fell on the good soil and produced fruit, some a hundred, some sixty, some thirty.

Let the one who has ears listen.

And the disciples came to him and said, Why do you speak to them in parables?

He answered them, Because to you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of the heavens, but to them it has not been given.

For whoever has, it will be given to him and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.

Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear nor understand.

And the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled for them, which says: You will hear and not understand, and seeing you will see but not perceive.

For the heart of this people has grown dull, and with their ears they have heard heavily, and they have closed their eyes; lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn back, and I heal them.

But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.

Truly I say to you, many prophets and righteous ones desired to see what you see and did not see it, and to hear what you hear and did not hear it.

Therefore, listen to the parable of the sower.

Whenever anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the one sown beside the road.

But the one sown on the rocky places is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy,

But he does not have root in himself, but is temporary; and when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, he immediately stumbles.

But the one sown among the thorns is the one who hears the word, and the anxiety of this age and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

But the one sown on the good soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces some a hundred, some sixty, some thirty.

He put forward another parable to them, saying: The kingdom of the heavens is like a man sowing good seed in his field.

While people were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away.

But when the grass grew up and produced fruit, then the weeds also appeared.

Then the slaves of the householder came and said to him, Lord, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where then does it have weeds?

But he said to them, A man who is an enemy did this. And the servants said to him, Do you want us then to go and gather them?

But he says, No, lest while gathering the weeds you uproot the wheat along with them.

Let both grow together until the harvest; and at the time of the harvest I will say to the harvesters, Gather first the weeds and bind them into bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.

He put another parable before them, saying: The kingdom of the heavens is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field.

Which is smaller than all the seeds, but when it grows, it is greater than the vegetables and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.

He spoke another parable to them: The kingdom of the heavens is like yeast, which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour until it was all leavened.

Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables, and without a parable he did not speak to them.

so that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled: I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the age.

Then leaving the crowds, he went into the house. And his disciples approached him, saying, Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.

The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man.

The field is the world; the good seed are the sons of the kingdom; the weeds are the sons of the evil one,

But the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels.

Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so it will be at the end of the age.

The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all the causes of stumbling and those who practice lawlessness,

and they will throw them into the furnace of fire; there will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.

Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. The one who has ears, let him hear.

The kingdom of the heavens is like a treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid, and from his joy he goes away and sells all that he has and buys that field.

Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like a man, a merchant seeking fine pearls.

But having found one precious pearl, he went away and sold all that he had and bought it.

Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like a net thrown into the sea and gathering fish of every kind;

When it was filled, they brought it up to the shore, sat down, and gathered the good into containers, but threw away the rotten.

So it will be at the end of the age: the angels will come out and separate the wicked from among the righteous.

And they will throw them into the furnace of fire; there will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.

Have you understood all these things? They say to him, Yes.

He said to them, Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of the heavens is like a householder who brings out of his treasure new and old.

And when Jesus finished these parables, he departed from there.

And coming into his hometown, he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were amazed and said, Where does this man have this wisdom and these powers?

Is this not the son of the carpenter? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?

And are not all his sisters with us? Where then does this one have all these things?

And they were offended at him. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.

And he did not perform many miracles there because of their unbelief.
