At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus,

And he said to his servants, This is John the Baptist; he has been raised from the dead, and for this reason the powers are working in him.

For Herod had seized John, bound him, and put him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of Philip his brother.

For John was saying to him, It is not lawful for you to have her.

And wanting to kill him, he feared the crowd, because they held him as a prophet.

Now when Herod’s birthday feast took place, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst and pleased Herod,

Therefore, after he swore an oath, he agreed to give her whatever she might ask.

But prompted by her mother, she said, Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.

And the king, grieved because of the oaths and those reclining with him, commanded to be given,

And having sent, he beheaded John in the prison.

And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she carried it to her mother.

And his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and they went and reported it to Jesus.

Now when Jesus heard, he withdrew from there by boat to a deserted place privately. And when the crowds heard, they followed him on foot from the towns.

And going out, he saw a large crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

When evening came, the disciples approached him, saying, The place is deserted and the hour has already passed; send away the crowds so that, having gone into the villages, they may buy food for themselves.

But Jesus said to them, They do not need to go away; give them something to eat yourselves.

But they say to him, We do not have here except five loaves and two fish.

He said, Bring them here to me.

And having commanded the crowds to recline on the grass, taking the five loaves and the two fish, looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke and gave to the disciples the loaves, and the disciples to the crowds.

And they all ate and were satisfied, and they took up the twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained.

And those who ate were men about five thousand, besides women and children.

And immediately he compelled the disciples to get into a boat and go ahead of him to the other side, until he dismissed the crowds.

And after dismissing the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. And when evening came, he was there alone.

But the boat was already many stadia away from the land, being battered by the waves, for the wind was against it.

But in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them walking on the sea.

But the disciples, seeing him walking on the sea, were terrified and said, It is a ghost, and they cried out in fear.

Immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, Take courage, I am; do not be afraid.

But Peter answered him, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters.

He said, Come. And Peter, having gone down from the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.

But seeing the strong wind, he became afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me.

But immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and took hold of him, and said to him, Little-faith, why did you doubt?

And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.

Those in the boat worshiped him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God.

And having crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.

And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent word throughout all that surrounding region, and they brought to him all who were suffering.

And they begged him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment; and as many as touched it were saved.
