The Koine Bible

Now in the morning all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.

And having bound him, they led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor.

Then Judas, the one who handed him over, seeing that he was condemned, repented and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.

Saying, I have sinned by delivering innocent blood. But they said, What is that to us? You see to it.

And throwing the silver into the temple, he withdrew, and going away he hanged himself.

But the chief priests, having taken the silver, said, It is not lawful to put it into the treasury, since it is the price of blood.

But having taken counsel, they bought with the money the Potter’s Field for a burial place for foreigners.

Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood until today.

Then was fulfilled what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying: And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the one valued, whom the sons of Israel valued,

and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.

Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, Are you the king of the Jews? Jesus said, You say so.

And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he did not answer anything.

Then Pilate said to him, Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?

And he did not answer him with even one word, so that the governor was greatly amazed.

Now at the festival, the governor was accustomed to releasing to the crowd one prisoner whom they wanted.

At that time they had a notable prisoner called Jesus Barabbas.

Now when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, Which one do you want me to release to you, Jesus Barabbas or Jesus called Messiah?

For he knew that they had handed him over because of envy.

While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him saying, Do not have anything to do with that righteous man, for today I suffered much because of him in a dream.

But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to destroy Jesus.

The governor answered them, What do you want me to release for you, the one or the other? They said, Barabbas.

Pilate said to them, What then shall I do with Jesus called the Messiah? They all say, Let him be crucified.

But he said, What evil has he done? And they shouted all the more, saying, Crucify him.

But Pilate, seeing that nothing was gaining ground but rather a greater uproar was happening, took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, I am innocent of this blood; you will see.

And all the people answered, His blood is on us and on our children.

Then he released to them Barabbas, but having scourged Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified.

Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the praetorium and gathered the whole cohort against him.

And having stripped him, they put a scarlet cloak on him,

And having woven a crown of thorns, they placed it on his head and a reed in his right hand, and kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews,

And having spit on him, they took the reed and struck him on his head.

And when they had mocked him, they took off the cloak from him and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him.

As they went out, they found a man from Cyrene named Simon; they compelled him to carry his cross.

And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which is called the Place of a Skull,

They gave him wine mixed with gall to drink, and after tasting it, he did not want to drink.

And having crucified him, they divided his clothes by casting lots,

And sitting down, they were watching him there.

And they placed above his head the charge against him written: This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.

Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.

And those passing by were blaspheming him, shaking their heads.

And saying, The one who destroys the temple and in three days builds it up, save yourself. If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.

Likewise the chief priests, mocking, together with the scribes and elders, said,

He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.

He trusted in God; let Him rescue him now if He wants him, for he said, I am the Son of God.

And the robbers who were crucified with him also insulted him.

From the sixth hour darkness came upon all the land until the ninth hour.

About the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Some of those standing there, having heard, said that he was calling Elijah.

And immediately one of them ran and, taking a sponge filled with sour wine, and placing it on a reed, gave him a drink.

But the others said, Let us see if Elijah comes to save him.

But Jesus, again crying out with a loud voice, gave up the spirit.

And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, and the earth shook, and the rocks were split,

And the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised,

And coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many.

Now the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that happened, were very afraid and said, Truly this was the Son of God.

There were also many women there watching from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee to serve him.

Among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

When evening had come, a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph came, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus.

This man, having come to Pilate, asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given.

And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

And he placed it in his new tomb which he had cut out in the rock, and rolling a large stone to the door of the tomb, he went away.

Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting opposite the tomb.

Now on the next day, which is after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together to Pilate.

saying, Lord, we remembered that that deceiver said while still alive, After three days I will rise.

Therefore, order the tomb to be secured until the third day, so that his disciples may not come and steal him and say to the people, He has been raised from the dead, and the last deception will be worse than the first.

Pilate said to them, You have a guard; go, secure it as you know.

But having gone, they secured the tomb, sealing the stone with the guard.
