And the foreigners call the priests and the diviners and their enchanters, saying, What shall we do with the ark of the Lord? Make known to us in what we shall send it away to its place.
And they said, If you are sending away the ark of the covenant of the Lord God of Israel, by no means send it away empty, but by returning you shall return to it a payment for the affliction, and then you shall be healed, and his hand shall be propitiated for you; will it not indeed turn away from you?
And they say, What is the guilt offering we shall give back to it? And they said, According to the number of the satraps of the Philistines, five golden hemorrhoids, because one plague is on you and on your rulers and on your people.
and golden mice, a likeness of your mice that are destroying the land, and you shall give glory to the Lord, so that he may lighten his hand from you and from your gods and from your land
And why do you harden your hearts, as Egypt and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? Did they not, when he mocked them, send them away, and they went?
And now take and make a new cart and two cows that have calved, without the offspring, and yoke the cows to the cart, and lead the offspring away from behind them into the house
And you shall take the ark and place it on the cart, and the golden vessels you shall return to it as a guilt offering, and you shall put them in a chest by its side, and you shall send it away and drive it away, and it shall go away
And you shall see if it goes on the road of its own border toward Bethshemesh, he has done to us this great evil; and if not, then we shall know that his hand has not touched us, but this has happened to us by chance.
And the Philistines did thus, and they took two cows that had calved first, and they yoked them in the cart, and they shut up their young in the house
And they put the ark on the wagon, and the guilt-offering, and the golden mice
And the cows went straight on the way toward the road of Bethshemesh; on one path they kept going and lowing, and they did not turn aside to the right nor to the left, and the satraps of the Philistines were going behind it as far as the borders of Bethshemesh
Now the men of Bethshemesh were reaping the wheat harvest in the valley, and they lifted up their eyes and saw the ark of the Lord, and they rejoiced to meet it.
And the cart came into the field of Osee, which is in Bethsames, and they set there beside it a great stone, and they cut up the wood of the cart, and they offered up the cows as a whole burnt offering to the Lord.
And the Levites brought up the ark of the Lord and the gold articles along with it and the golden vessels upon it, and they placed them on the great stone, and the men of Beth-shemesh offered up whole burnt offerings and sacrifices on that day to the Lord.
And the five satraps of the Philistines saw, and they returned to Ashkelon on that day
And these are the golden offerings that the Philistines returned as a penalty to the Lord: one from Azotus, one from Gaza, one from Ascalon, one from Gath, one from Ekron.
and the gold mice according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines, of the five satrapies, from fortified city even to village, and as far as the great stone on which they placed the ark of the covenant of the Lord, which was in the field of Ose, the Beth-shemeshite
And the sons of Jechonius did not rejoice among the men of Bethshemesh, because they saw the ark of the Lord; and he struck among them seventy men and fifty thousand men, and the people mourned because the Lord struck a very great plague among the people.
And the men from Beth-shemesh said, Who will be able to pass before the Lord, this holy one? And to whom will the ark of the Lord go up from us?
And they send messengers to those dwelling in Kiriath-jearim, saying, The foreigners have returned the ark of the Lord; go down and bring it up to yourselves.
