And it came to pass after about a month that Nahash the Ammonite went up and encamped against Jabesh Gilead, and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash the Ammonite, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you.

And Nahash the Ammonite said to them, In this I will make a covenant with you, in my digging out of you every right eye, and I will put a reproach upon Israel.

And the men of Jabesh say to him, Leave us seven days, and we will send messengers into all the border of Israel; if there is not one saving us, we will come out to you.

And the messengers came to Gibeah to Saul and spoke the words in the ears of the people, and all the people lifted up their voice and wept.

And behold, Saul was coming after the morning from the field, and Saul said, Why is it that the people are weeping? And they told him the words of the sons of Jabesh.

And the Spirit of the Lord sprang upon Saul as he heard these words, and his anger was kindled against them exceedingly.

And he took two oxen and cut them in pieces and sent them throughout all the border of Israel by means of messengers, saying, Whoever is not coming out after Saul and after Samuel, thus they shall do to his oxen. And a terror of the Lord came upon the people of Israel, and they cried out as one man.

And Abiezek musters them at Bamah, all the men of Israel, six hundred thousand, and the men of Judah, seventy thousand

And he said to the messengers who were coming, Thus you shall say to the men of Jabesh: Tomorrow, for you there will be deliverance when the sun is hot. And the messengers came into the city and reported to the men of Jabesh, and they were glad.

And the men of Jabesh said to Nahash the Ammonite, Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you shall do to us the good in your eyes.

And it happened after the next day that Saul set the people in three companies, and they went into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and they were striking the sons of Ammon until the day grew hot, and those who were left were scattered, and two were not left among them together

And the people said to Samuel, Who is he that said, Saul shall not reign over us? Deliver up the men, and we will put them to death.

And Saul said, No one shall be put to death on this day, because today the Lord has worked salvation in Israel.

And Samuel said to the people, saying, Let us go to Gilgal and let us renew the kingdom there.

And all the people went to Gilgal, and Samuel anointed Saul there as king before the Lord in Gilgals, and he sacrificed there sacrifices and peace offerings before the Lord, and Samuel and all Israel rejoiced greatly.
