And he gathered the priests and the Levites and said to them, Go out into the cities of Judah and collect money from all Israel to strengthen the house of the Lord year by year, and make haste to speak; and the Levites did not hasten.
And King Joash called Jehoiada the ruler, and said to him, Why have you not looked after the Levites to bring in from Judah and Jerusalem the tax prescribed by Moses the man of God, when he assembled Israel to the tent of the testimony?
For Athaliah was the lawless one, and her sons had torn down the house of God, and indeed the holy things of the house of the Lord they made for the Baals.
And it came to pass, as they brought the chest to the officers of the king by the hand of the Levites, and as they saw that the silver had increased, that the scribe of the king and the officer of the chief priest came and emptied the chest and set it in its place; thus they did day by day and gathered much silver
And the king and Jehoiada the priest gave it to the men doing the work for the labor of the house of the Lord, and they hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the Lord, and smiths of iron and bronze to repair the house of the Lord.
And the workers were working, and the length of the work rose in their hands, and they restored the house of the Lord to its standing, and they strengthened it.
And when they had finished, they brought the remainder of the silver to the king and to Jehoiada, and they made vessels for the house of the Lord, vessels for the service of burnt offerings and golden and silver bowls, and they offered burnt offerings in the house of the Lord continually all the days of Jehoiada.
And they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, and served the Astartes and the idols, and wrath came upon Judah and upon Jerusalem in that day.
And the spirit of God clothed Azariah, the son of Jehoiada, the priest, and he stood above the people and said, Thus says the Lord: Why do you pass over the commandments of the Lord, and you will not prosper? For you have abandoned the Lord, and he will abandon you.
And Joash did not remember the mercy which Jehoiada his father had done with him, and he put to death his son. And as he was dying, he said, Let the Lord see and judge.
And it happened, after the completion of the year, that the force of Syria came up against him, and it came against Judah and against Jerusalem, and they destroyed all the rulers of the people among the people, and they sent all their spoils to the king of Damascus.
For with a few men the power of Syria came, and God gave into their hands very great power, because they had forsaken the Lord God of their fathers; and with Joash he executed judgments.
And after their going away from him, because they left him in great diseases, his servants conspired against him because of the bloods of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they put him to death on his bed, and he died; and they buried him in the city of David, but they did not bury him in the tomb of the kings.
And his sons, all of them, and the five came to him; and the rest, behold, are written in the writing of the kings; and Amaziah his son reigned instead of him
