Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Jedida, daughter of Adaiah, from Baseroth.

And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, and he walked in all the way of David his father; he did not turn aside to the right or to the left.

And it came to pass in the eighteenth year for King Josiah, in the eighth month, that the king sent Shaphan son of Azaliah son of Meshullam, the scribe of the house of the Lord, saying:

Go up to Hilkiah the great priest, and seal up the silver that was brought into the house of the Lord, which those who keep the threshold collected from the people

And let them give it into the hand of those doing the works of those appointed in the house of the Lord; and he gave it to those doing the works, to those in the house of the Lord, to strengthen the breach of the house

to the carpenters and to the builders and to the wallers, and for acquiring timber and quarried stones, to strengthen the breach of the house

Only they did not require from them an accounting of the silver that was given to them, because they were doing it in trust.

And Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord. And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.

And he brought it to King Josiah and returned a word to the king and said, Your servants have melted the silver that was found in the house of the Lord, and they have given it into the hand of those doing the work, those appointed in the house of the Lord.

And Shaphan the scribe said to the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest gave me a book, and Shaphan read it before the king.

And it happened, when the king heard the words of the book of the law, that he tore his garments.

And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Achikam son of Shaphan, and Achbor son of Michaiah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the servant of the king, saying:

Come, seek the Lord for me and for all the people and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that was found, because great is the wrath of the Lord that has been kindled against us, because our fathers did not hear the words of this book, to do according to all that is written against us.

And Hilkiah the priest went, and Ahikam and Achobor and Shaphan and Asaiah, to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum son of Tikvah son of Harhas, the wardrobe keeper; and she was dwelling in Jerusalem in the Maseena, and they spoke to her.

And she said to them, Thus says the Lord the God of Israel: say to the man who sent you to me,

Thus says the Lord: Behold, I am bringing evils upon this place and upon all its inhabitants, all the words of the book which the king of Judah read.

because they have forsaken me and have burned incense to other gods, so that they might provoke me to anger with the works of their hands; and my wrath will be kindled in this place and will not be quenched

And to the king of Judah, who sent you to seek the Lord, thus you shall say to him: Thus says the Lord God of Israel: The words that you heard,

Because your heart was softened and you were humbled before the face of the Lord, when you heard all that I spoke against this place and against those inhabiting it, for it to be for destruction and for a curse, and you tore your garments and wept before me, I also have heard, says the Lord

Not so; behold, I am adding you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, and it shall not be seen by your eyes among all the evils that I am bringing upon this place. And they returned the word to the king.
