In the first year of Darius the son of Xerxes, of the Median lineage, who became king over the kingdom of the Chaldeans.

In the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the books the number of the years when the command was given concerning the land through Jeremiah the prophet, to raise up for the fulfillment of the reproach of Jerusalem seventy years.

I set my face toward the Lord God, to seek prayer and mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.

I prayed to the Lord God and confessed and said, Behold, Lord, you are the great and mighty and fearful God, keeping the covenant and mercy for those who love you and for those who keep your commandments.

We have acted unjustly, we have acted impiously, and we have turned away and transgressed your commandments and your judgments.

We did not listen to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings and our rulers and our fathers and to every people upon the earth.

Lord, righteousness belongs to you, and to us the shame of face on this day—to the men of Judah and those dwelling in Jerusalem, and to all the people of Israel, near and far, in all the lands to which you scattered them, there in the trespass with which they trespassed against you.

To us belongs the shame of face, and to our kings and rulers and to our fathers, because we sinned against you.

To the Lord belong righteousness and mercy, because we have departed from you.

We did not listen to the voice of the Lord our God, to follow your law which you gave before Moses and us through your servants the prophets.

All Israel abandoned your law and turned away, not to heed your voice; and the curse and the oath written in the law of Moses, servant of God, came upon us, because we sinned against him.

He confirmed for us his ordinances, whatever he spoke against us and against our judges, whatever you judged to bring upon us: great evils such as had not occurred under heaven, as what occurred in Jerusalem.

All the evils written in the covenant of Moses came upon us, and we did not seek the face of the Lord our God, to turn away from our sins and to understand your righteousness, Lord.

The Lord God kept watch over the evils and brought them upon us, for the Lord our God is righteous in everything that he may do, and we did not listen to his voice.

And now, Master Lord our God, who brought out your people from Egypt by your high arm, and made for yourself a name according to this day; we sinned, we acted ignorantly.

According to your righteousness, let your anger turn away, and your wrath, from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain, because through our sins and through the ignorances of our fathers, Jerusalem and your people, Lord, have become a reproach among all those around us.

Now hear, Master, the prayer of your servant and my supplications, and let your face look upon your holy mountain, which is desolate, for the sake of your servants, Master.

Lord, incline your ear and hear me; open your eyes and see our desolations and of your city over which your name has been called; for not on account of our righteousnesses do we make our petitions in our prayers before you, but on account of your mercy.

You, Lord, make atonement; hear and act, and do not delay for your own sake, Master, because your name has been invoked over your city Zion and over your people Israel.

While I was still speaking, praying and confessing my sins and the sins of my people Israel, and making supplication in my prayers before the Lord my God, and on behalf of the holy mountain of our God,

While I was still speaking in my prayer, behold, the man whom I had seen in my dream at the beginning, Gabriel, swiftly coming, approached me at the hour of the evening sacrifice.

He came near and spoke with me and said, Daniel, now I have come out to show you understanding.

At the beginning of your supplication a command went forth from the Lord, and I came to show you, for you are pitied; and understand the command.

Seventy weeks have been determined for your people and for the city of Zion, to finish sin, to make injustices cease, to wipe away injustices, to understand the vision, to give everlasting righteousness, to bring the vision to completion, and to gladden the Holy of Holies.

You shall know and understand and rejoice, and you shall find decrees to answer, and you shall build Jerusalem as a city for the Lord.

After seven and seventy and sixty-two, an anointing will be removed, and it will not be; and a kingdom of nations will destroy the city and the sanctuary with the anointed one, and its end will come with wrath, and until the time of completion it will be warred against from war.

The covenant will prevail over many, and again he will turn back, and it will be rebuilt in breadth and length; and at the completion of times, and after seven and seventy times and sixty-two years, until the time of the completion of war, desolation will be removed, when the covenant prevails for many weeks; and at the end of the week the sacrifice and offering will be removed, and upon the temple will be the abomination of desolations until completion, and completion will be given upon the desolation.
