And Dinah, the daughter of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob, went out to observe the daughters of the men of the land.

And Sychem the son of Emmor the Horraean, the ruler of the land, saw her, and taking her he lay with her and humbled her.

And he fixed himself to the soul of Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the maiden and spoke to the maiden’s understanding to her

And Shechem said to Hamor his father, saying, Take for me this girl as a wife.

And Jacob heard that the son of Hamor had defiled Dinah his daughter; but his sons were with his cattle in the field. And Jacob kept silent until they came.

And Hamor, the father of Shechem, went out to Jacob to speak to him.

And the sons of Jacob came from the field; and when they heard it, the men were grieved, and it was very distressing to them, because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel, having lain with the daughter of Jacob, and thus it must not be.

And Emmor spoke to them, saying, Shechem my son has set his heart on your daughter; give her therefore to him as a wife.

Make marriages with us; give us your daughters, and take our daughters for your sons.

And dwell among us, and the land, behold, is broad before you; dwell and trade in it, and acquire possession in it.

And Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, Let me find favor before you, and whatever you should say, we will give.

Multiply the bride-price very much, and I will give as you may say to me, and you will give to me this girl as a wife.

But the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father with deceit, and they spoke to them because they had defiled Dinah their sister.

And Simeon and Levi, the brothers of Dinah, sons of Leah, said to them, We shall not be able to do this thing, to give our sister to a man who has uncircumcision, for it is a reproach to us.

In this way we shall be like you and shall dwell among you, if you become as we are, and you also, by the circumcising of every male among you.

and we will give our daughters to you, and from your daughters we will take wives for us, and we will dwell beside you, and we will become as one nation

But if you do not listen to us, to be circumcised, then taking our daughters we will go away.

And the words were pleasing in the sight of Emmor and in the sight of Sychem son of Emmor

And the young man did not delay to do this thing, for he was intent on the daughter of Jacob, and he himself was most honored of all those in his father’s house.

And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and they spoke to the men of their city, saying:

These men are peaceful with us; let them dwell on the land and trade it, and behold, the land is broad before them. We will take their daughters for ourselves as wives, and we will give our daughters to them.

Only in this will the men agree with us, to dwell with us, so as to be one people, in our circumcising every male, as they also are circumcised.

and their cattle and their possessions and their livestock, will they not be ours? Only in this let us agree with them, and they will dwell with us

And Hamor and Shechem his son heard, all who went out through the gate of their city, and every male was circumcised in the flesh of their foreskin.

And it happened on the third day, when they were in pain, that the two sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword and went into the city in safety and killed every male.

and they killed Hamor and Shechem his son by the edge of the sword, and they took Dinah out of the house of Shechem, and they went out

And the sons of Jacob came upon the wounded and plundered the city in which they had defiled Dinah their sister

and their sheep and their oxen and their donkeys, and whatever was in the city and whatever was in the field, they took

and they took captive all their bodies and all their goods and their wives, and they plundered whatever was in the city and whatever was in the houses

And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, You have made me hateful, so that I am evil among all those dwelling the land, both among the Canaanites and among the Perizzites; and I am few in number, and they will gather together against me and strike me down, and I will be destroyed, I and my house.

But they said, Shall they use our sister as if she were a harlot?
