The word that came from the Lord to Jeremiah after Nebuzaradan the chief cook had sent him, from Daman, in the taking of him in handcuffs in the midst of the captivity of Judah, those who had been led into Babylon

And the chief baker took him and said to him, The Lord your God has spoken these evils against this place.

And the Lord did because you sinned against him and did not listen to his voice

Behold, I have loosed you from the handcuffs on your hands; if it is good in your sight to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will set my eyes upon you.

But if not, run away, and return to Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon appointed in the land of Judah, and dwell with him in the midst of the people in the land of Judah, for all good in your eyes, to go, go; and the captain of the guard gave him gifts and sent him away.

And he came to Gedaliah at Maspha and sat in the midst of the people who had been left in the land

And all the commanders of the force in the field heard, they and their men, that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah in the land and had entrusted to him men and their women, whom he did not deport to Babylon.

And Ishmael son of Nethaniah came to Gedaliah at Mizpah, and Johanan son of Kareah, and Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah son of the Maacathite, they and their men

And Gedaliah swore to them and to their men, saying, Do not fear before the face of the Chaldeans’ servants; dwell in the land and work for the king of Babylon, and it will be better for you.

And behold, I am sitting before you in Mizpah to stand against the Chaldeans who may come against you, and you, gather wine and fruit, and gather oil, and put into your vessels, and dwell in the cities which you have taken.

And all the Jews who were in the land of Moab and among the sons of Ammon and those in Idumea and those in all the land heard that the king of Babylon had given a remnant to Judah and that he had appointed over them Gedaliah son of Ahikam

And they came to Gedaliah into the land of Judah, into Mizpah, and they gathered wine and very much fruit and oil.

And Johanan son of Kareah and all the leaders of the force who were in the fields came to Gedaliah in Mizpah

And they said to him, If you know for a certainty that Baalis king of the sons of Ammon has sent Ishmael against you to strike your life; and Gedaliah did not believe them.

And Johanan said to Gedaliah secretly in Mizpah, I will indeed go and strike Ishmael, and let no one know, lest he strike your life, and all Judah who have been gathered to you be scattered, and the remnant of Judah perish.

And Gedaliah said to Johanan, Do not do this thing, because you are speaking falsehood about Ishmael.
