οὐχὶ πειρατήριόν ἐστιν ὁ βίος ἀνθρώπου ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ ὥσπερ μισθίου αὐθημερινοῦ ἡ ζωὴ αὐτοῦ

Is not the life of a man on the earth a testing place, and as that of a hired man for the day, his life?

ὥσπερ θεράπων δεδοικὼς τὸν κύριον αὐτοῦ καὶ τετευχὼς σκιᾶς ἢ ὥσπερ μισθωτὸς ἀναμένων τὸν μισθὸν αὐτοῦ

or like a servant fearing his master and having obtained shade, or like a hired man awaiting his wages

κἀγὼ ὑπέμεινα μῆνας κενούς νύκτες δὲ ὀδυνῶν δεδομέναι μοί εἰσιν

So I also have endured empty months, and nights of pains have been given to me.

κοιμηθῶ λέγω πότε ἡμέρα ὡς δ᾿ ἂν ἀναστῶ πάλιν πότε ἑσπέρα πλήρης δὲ γίνομαι ὀδυνῶν ἀπὸ ἑσπέρας ἕως πρωί

If I sleep, I say, When will it be day? And when shall I rise again? When will it be evening? And I am filled with pains from evening until morning.

δέ μου τὸ σῶμα ἐν σαπρίᾳ σκωλήκων τήκω δὲ βώλακας γῆς ἀπὸ ἰχῶρος ξύων

My body is covered with decay and the crusts of worms; I melt away the clods of earth from the discharge of sores.

δὲ βίος μού ἐστιν ἐλαφρότερος λαλιᾶς ἀπόλωλεν δὲ ἐν κενῇ ἐλπίδι

And my life is lighter than a word; and it has perished in empty hope

οὖν ὅτι πνεῦμά μου ἡ ζωὴ καὶ οὐκέτι ἐπανελεύσεται ὁ ὀφθαλμός μου ἰδεῖν ἀγαθόν

Remember then that my life is a breath, and my eye will no longer return to see good.

περιβλέψεταί με ὀφθαλμὸς ὁρῶντός με οἱ ὀφθαλμοί σου ἐν ἐμοί καὶ οὐκέτι εἰμὶ

The eye of one seeing me will not look around for me; your eyes are on me, and I am no longer.

νέφος ἀποκαθαρθὲν ἀπ᾿ οὐρανοῦ ἐὰν γὰρ ἄνθρωπος καταβῇ εἰς ᾅδην οὐκέτι μὴ ἀναβῇ

As a cloud purified from heaven, for if a man go down into Hades, he shall by no means go up again

οὐ μὴ ἐπιστρέψῃ ἔτι εἰς τὸν ἴδιον οἶκον οὐδὲ μὴ ἐπιγνῷ αὐτὸν ἔτι ὁ τόπος αὐτοῦ

and he shall surely not return anymore to his own house, nor shall his place know him anymore

οὖν οὐδὲ ἐγὼ φείσομαι τῷ στόματί μου λαλήσω ἐν ἀνάγκῃ ὤν ἀνοίξω πικρίαν ψυχῆς μου συνεχόμενος

Nevertheless I also will not spare my mouth; in necessity I will speak, being in distress; I will open the bitterness of my soul, being constrained.

θάλασσά εἰμι ἢ δράκων ὅτι κατέταξας ἐπ᾿ ἐμὲ φυλακήν

Am I a sea or a dragon, that you have set a guard over me?

ὅτι παρακαλέσει με ἡ κλίνη μου ἀνοίσω δὲ πρὸς ἐμαυτὸν ἰδίᾳ λόγον τῇ κοίτῃ μου

I said that my bed will comfort me; and I will lift up a word by myself to my couch.

με ἐνυπνίοις καὶ ἐν ὁράμασίν με καταπλήσσεις

You frighten me with dreams and you overwhelm me with visions

ἀπὸ πνεύματός μου τὴν ψυχήν μου ἀπὸ δὲ θανάτου τὰ ὀστᾶ μου

you will remove my soul from my spirit, but my bones from death

γὰρ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ζήσομαι ἵνα μακροθυμήσω ἀπόστα ἀπ᾿ ἐμοῦ κενὸς γάρ μου ὁ βίος

For I shall not live forever, so that I should be patient; depart from me, for my life is empty.

γάρ ἐστιν ἄνθρωπος ὅτι ἐμεγάλυνας αὐτὸν ἢ ὅτι προσέχεις τὸν νοῦν εἰς αὐτὸν

What indeed is man, that you have magnified him, or that you set your mind on him?

ἐπισκοπὴν αὐτοῦ ποιήσῃ ἕως τὸ πρωὶ καὶ εἰς ἀνάπαυσιν αὐτὸν κρινεῖς

or will you make your visitation of him until morning, and to rest will you judge him?

τίνος οὐκ ἐᾷς με οὐδὲ προΐῃ με ἕως ἂν καταπίω τὸν πτύελόν μου ἐν ὀδύνῃ

How long will you not leave me alone, nor let me be, until I swallow my saliva in pain?

If I have sinned, what am I able to do to you, you who know the mind of men? Why have you set me as your burden? And I am a burden upon you.

And why do you not make forgetfulness of my lawlessness and cleansing of my sin? But now I shall go away into the earth; and when I rise early, I shall no longer be.
